Galaxy Note 8: Facial Recognition Can Still Be Fooled with a Photo

Web developer Mel Tajon decided to check out the Galaxy Note 8 at Best Buy but found that the facial recognition system has not improved in terms of security: users can still unlock the device using Facebook profile pics, Instagram selfies, and so on. This problem originated with the Galaxy S8, and there were claims that the iris scanner could be fooled under certain conditions as well.

Always a surprise that Samsung and others spent millions for designing a new smartphone but the security aspect are totally ignored. It's not that this hack exist since 2002 or something.

Why did you try it with a demo unit? Try it with a retail unit. It won't unlock

I mean face unlock is just that, FACE unlock. Who would think that you cant fool it with a picture of someones FACE. Its not Retina/Iris or fingerprint. Clickbait?

here's an idea...try it on a retail Note, not one that's in demo mode at a Samsung kiosk. Anyways, Mel Tajon already admitted on his twitter account that his test was garbage and debunked.

The reason why it worked because the phone was running in "Retailer mode"...which means it can be easily fool. Retailer modes are still used because if a customer puts a facial recognition and forgets to remove it, the staff can still remove it without you being there. It is used to avoid accidental phone locks by the customers. But obviously the one you're gonna buy for yourself is not gonna run the Retailer Mode cuz the customers won't be using your phone.

This doesn't really matter at all actually, nobody cares about facial recognition since you can use the iris scanner for a more reliable and safer option that cannot be fooled by a picture. Only idiots use the facial recognition.
