Audi 80 Quattro with 4 wheel steering

Another "Go pro bonanza" with some onboard footage of a Audi 80 Quattro with 4 wheel steering. Yep, you read that right! As you see this car is not stock, and when it pulls and steers on all wheels it can be sketchy fast!

Part of why this was possible was that Audi went to some cost-cutting measures in this era, which worked incredibly well, even on the legendary Ur-Quattro. They basically reversed the front suspension to make the rears and fixed them in place (can't remember if they were also crossed to the other side of the car). However, it worked out quite well and reduced parts counts needed for the suspension and portions of the driveline. We won't see that anymore, since technology moved on, but it was very clever of them.

Really good video, I quite like that you included the warm up lap, I was unsure at first but it definitely made the video even better! The suspense was great as you waited for the temps to come up and you heard little bits of boost building, then you really felt it when he gave it full boost for the first time!

Amazing old Audi!! Makes me miss my 1984 4000s Quattro 5cyl, 5 speed, diff lock. If only I had the appreciation for German cars that I do now I never would have sold it.

Mitsubishi Gallant V6 Twin Turbo 2500cc had 4WD and 4WS.
Let's not forget the Daddy - the R32 GTR skyline 4WD + 4WS.
Nissan 300 ZX - RWD + 4WS.
Also the Subaru XT 4WD + 4WS.
There were many others but these are the main ones back in the day.
I remember the first time the ear steering activated when I was driving an R32 GTR. I came to a corner much too fast, and was convinced I was going through the wall...then the 4WS kicked In and for a sit second I thought the back end had lost grip, the rear swung round and I made the corner, the fright turned to laughter. Amazing.
This Audi is beautiful. Clever engineering. Would love to know how the system works - must be computer controlled ....just think If Audi had done it back then....the cars would have been untouchable...

Many cars have had 4 wheel steering. I believe the 1987 Honda Prelude was the first production car to have this system. Today four wheel steering is back, in everything from the BMW 5 series, and 2014 models Porsche 911.

Arent rear wheels suposed to steer at the same direction as front wheels at higher speeds?

Speedo is likely dead because the transmission is likely out of a 20v car which has an electronic speedo. You can fix it but it is difficult and on a track car not really worth it. The tach does what it does because the redline on a 20vt motor is significantly higher than the 4k even registers.  So when you go above that the 4k tach dumps.  I have the same car with same motor and trans combination and it does the same thing.  The 4 wheel steering thing is really cool.  A lot of work for relatively little gain but for pure cool factor big thumbs up.

Well, someone did played nice job with it. Definitely fixed that turn in problem with them, hes barely using steering input when changing corners from side to side. Would get bank loan for similar setup.

I know it's not stock, but is that the 2.3 5cyl tuned with bov and also did the 4 wheel steer come off another car or is it a self made one of a kind prototype?
