Ostend (Dutch: Oostende)
Beach of Ostend considered one of the most beautiful ones in Europe.
Ostend is a Belgian coastal city and municipality, located in the province of West Flanders.
In Belgium, Ostend is known as the ‘Queen of Seaside Resorts’. This title is even more fitting as, according to a survey by the travel magazine Flight Network, the beach in this coastal city is amongst the fifty most beautiful beaches in Europe.

Only 50 minutes by train from Brussels, a visit to the Belgian coast is a great way to relax, enjoy the occasional summer sunshine and take a break from the city lifestyle. With 65 kilometres of coast, Belgium has a lot of different seaside resorts to choose from. We have put together a list of the best ways to take advantage and enjoy summertime at the Belgian seaside.

Ostend
As the only true ‘City at the Sea’, upon arrival you will discover over 9 kilometers of great sandy beaches that invite you to sunbathe, walk along the beautiful promenade and for the hardier individuals, take a refreshing dip in the North Sea. It’s worth noting that from 28 June until 31 August, Ostend plays host to the Sand Sculpture Festival. Ostend is also a lively city with a multitude of activities to enjoy ranging from museum events to shopping to sports to music and much more. With trains leaving from Brussels every 30 minutes, it’s great to spend the day out in Ostend catching some sun and enjoying the beach-city experience.

Ostend is known for its sea-side esplanade, including the Royal Galleries of Ostend, pier, and fine-sand beaches. Ostend is visited by many day-trippers heading to the beaches, especially during July and August. Tourists from inland Belgium and foreigners mostly arrive by train (day trips) and head for the closest beach area, the Klein Strand, located next to the pier. The locals and other residents in Belgium usually occupy the larger beach (het Groot Strand).

Near the beach is a well-preserved section of the fortified Atlantic Wall, open to the public as the Atlantic Wall Open Air Museum located in Raversijde. One can walk through the streets around Het Vissersplein. At certain times, there are markets in the neighbourhood streets and in the summer the Vissersplein has music festivals. The Vissersplein (Bonenstraat/Kadzandstraat) is a car free zone with many brasseries where patrons can sit outside and have a drink. Towards the port side there are many little fish outlets, and beyond that the ferries can be observed docking.

Notable sites include:
the Casino and Fort Napoleon, Ostend.
Oostende railway station.
The Mercator, the ex training sailing ship for Belgian merchant navy officers, now open to the public to view.
Hippodrome Wellington, horse racing venue.
St Petrus and St Paulus Church, Ostend (Sint-Petrus-en-Pauluskerk), built in Neo Gothic style.
