It's time to check out Group 2 on the periodic table, the alkaline earth metals. This includes beryllium, magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, and radium. What can we say about their properties, reactivities, and applications? Let's find out!

Check out "Is This Wi-Fi Organic?", my book on disarming pseudoscience!

Hi I am 72 years old and have been co-opted into a quiz team with my scientific "knowledge". I have forgotten so much since 1967 when I started A level chemistry... and of course there's loads I never learned! The more modern numbering system for the groups was a shock! And of course there are lots more elements. I am concentrating on the 8 groups I was taught plus the transition metals. Revision for the quiz is one thing (probably no relevant question will come up) but the refreshing of my distant education is surprisingly enjoyable! Many thanks Dave xx

What would we do without calcium and magnesium? Thanks, Professor Dave. Very interesting overview of the alkaline earth metals.

Amazing series, I wonder how long the Silicon and Carbon episodes will be.

Can you make a video on predicting products for chemical equations?

4:35 Professor Dave, actually both aquamarine and emeralds are varieties of beryl. Otherwise, great video!

Strange that you said beryl is used for making fake gems, rather than pointing out that it's the mineral that constitutes the actual gems emerald and aquamarine. Also was hoping you'd show beryllium used as the backing of the JWST primary mirrors. Oh well.

Professor Dave please can you do a series on functional analysis. God bless you

Thank you. What are the common properties of "Group 3" instead?

I think you messed up that first part of the video when you had the symbols of the noble gasses

Vacuum tubes and blackboards you don't look that old. I remember using these things you didn't bring up the party lines and the fountain pen also things I've used in my lifetime.

I love the looks people give you when you tell them calcium is an alkaline earth metal 😂

"Well-known varieties of beryl include emerald and aquamarine. Naturally occurring, hexagonal crystals of beryl can be up to several meters in size, but terminated crystals are relatively rare. Pure beryl is colorless, but it is frequently tinted by impurities; possible colors are green, blue, yellow, pink, and red (the rarest)." (Wikipedia)

Interesting to find out that emeralds are "fake gems". Before clear enough glass was available, opticians used beryl for spectacles.
