If its your first visit to Kyoto and you don't speak the language, you should know that discovering the historic gems of the city could be a tough mission. You should either plan your trip very well or take a guided tour. One way or the other make sure you don't miss the Golden Pavilion which is the most important landmark in the city, and the most visited attraction. You should also visit the Silver pavilion, which unlike the gold one does not include any silver on it, it's just the name it was given in the 14th century. This was supposed to be the Shugon retirement palace, and he probably ran out of money before he managed to coat it with silver. Another attraction which combines new and old, more or less... is the Toei Kyoto studio park, which is a hybrid between a theme park and a working tv studio. Finally make sure you visit Gion, which is the last geisha district left in the whole of Japan.
