I review, breakdown and explain Black Mirror Season 6 Demon 79. I discuss the episode and react to the theories around Gaap not being real and it all taking place inside of her imagination. I also delve into the ending and provide evidence which supports both side of the prediction before coming to a conclusion.

Do you think the ending of this episode actually happened in reality? Or do you think it all took place inside of her head? Comment your thoughts below!

I personally think it’s both. I think GAAP does exist and the visions are real. However the loophole is that he takes her soul and mind and leaving her body in a insane asylum. The world ending could be made up by GAAP to accept being with him

It has to be both. Gaap is definitely real. As others mentioned, the fact that she knows Laura's name before she met her confirms it. Gaap is a lying demon who wants her soul. The world ending and all that was just bs he told her to corrupt and take her soul.

Love that it is all up to interpretation. This is my favorite Black Mirror episode ever. I like to believe her delusions are real, personally. Gaap gave her information she couldn’t have had access to in 1979, and he was 100% right when it came to the secrets the victims and others held.

Given what the Netflix people have said about Red Mirror, I see this as an alternate timeline, and that this probably did happen. Depends, now, on what Netflix does with Red Mirror concept. On, and in case anyone is wondering:
The Red Mirror label presents the Black Mirror creator with a unique opportunity to expand the series beyond the restrictions of the existing series into horror storytelling that can narratively surpass the more grounded parameters of science fiction.

If GAAP could see the future then he knew exactly that Nida wasn’t gonna be successful so maybe his plan from the start was taking her soul and the world didn’t end

My theory is that Gaap was real but the apocalypse itself was not, and that his goal wasn’t really to prevent an apocalypse but to cause it in the longer term by enabling the rise of fascism. This would explain why Gaap was so unhappy Nida chose Smart as her last target - if he wanted to prevent the apocalypse, why would he be interested in keeping a fascist around when those kind of people actually lead to nuclear threats and wars and instability? It also links into the “string of crimes” tied to immigrants mentioned in the episode. Could demons like Gaap specifically have been targeting immigrants to carry out murders in order to stir up xenophobic sentiment and enable the rise of fascists, actually bringing about the apocalypse faster? That could then dovetail into earlier episodes including the metal head dog (which Nida actually sees) and maybe even Men against Fire where there is a state sanctioned genocide going on.

I honestly like to think that Red Mirror is an alternate timeline and everything happened as is. The world ended everything after that event in that timeline is gone and those two r living happily ever after 😭 I was actually thinking the episode was gonna go the “it was all in her head route” and was VERY pleasantly surprised that it didn’t and Gaap showed up at the end to take her away. It was refreshing, I’m TIREDD of “it was all in their head” stories let this one be an exception to the trope loll

One thing that supports this all being in her head is the symbolism of using Boney M as her spirit guide. The group was just a front for a German Singer that thought he didn’t have the right look to sale the albums he made. The male in the group didn’t sing one song… he just danced and lip synced the songs that someone else sung… maybe he was that for Nida… just something lip syncing her mad thoughts.

The fact all the information she was getting from the demon was accurate, it's hard to believe that she just thought this up. At the end they tried to make us believe that she was losing her mind

I think it's real because of Laura, how would she have known the Tim's daughters name before she met her in the department store. This also makes me think none of those other events happen since she saved Laura changing the timeline, making her present timeline, one of manyand maybe some of the other times are ones where she sacrifices the detective instead of the other guy.

You know it is excellent tv/movies when endings can be seen from different angles
That's why Black Mirror/Red Mirror is so good.

I feel like I'm very alone in thinking the episode happened as-is.
She is not in the scenes where the world ends. Those are other people not influenced by the demon or her.
She barely seems even aware that the world is ending.

Here's another take: GAAP, calling 666 to contact his superiors, is obviously based on christian culture, while a supernatural being, created by her imagination, might rather be based on indian culture. On the other hand: The Boney M song may not just have inspired the demon's appearence, but also that choice as well, by being about Rasputin, a christian priest, who was also rumored to have the ability to see the future and to be in contact with demons or even being one himself.

With the appearance of the White Bear symbol, this episode reminds me of Bandersnatch where the symbol was used for yes/no or two different outcomes.
So I think it’s been made in a way where both endings could be true.

It only makes sense to be an alternative reality. Everything Gaap tells her about the politician we know to be true from other realities and this season does establish there are multiple timelines as the first episode states in an alt 1969 which was much more advanced than the previous shown timelines.

I don’t care what anyone says this is one of my favourite black mirror episodes!

I saw a theory that said some of the black mirror episodes are actually movies that exist within the black mirror universe, so a character that exists in the universe would be watching demon 79 (like when we see other black mirror episodes/spin offs exist on streamberry in Joan is awful). This would make sense of why her eyes look similar to the tech in the entire history ep when gaap makes her see things

Because Charlie Brooker specifically said this was a different 'supernatural' universe, my theory is Gaap was real and the apocalypse as canon, while Loch Henry was in the other universe alongside the rest of Black Mirror - I think this is also backed up by this episode being RED mirror not Black
