With falling sales and market regulations hampering the progress of direct e-commerce, US auto manufacturers must forge new routes to avoid the market slowdown. Rather than focusing on online sales, automakers are making brand sites into information hubs, optimizing for mobile and streamlining handoff to local dealerships.

In L2's Digital IQ Index: Auto, Ford pulls into the top spot for the second year in a row. The brand rides high on the success of its highly-rated FordPass app, and a personalized homepage that optimizes the site experience based on the visitor’s past browsing behavior.

You made me look at the Lincoln website. I looked from my desktop a little while back and was struck by how awful and dated it looked. Just now when I looked using my iphone I was surprised to see that it was, if not exactly good, at least pretty passable. Interesting that so many people shop cars with their phones. I really had no idea.

Every layer of the automotive industry (Tier 1, 2, & 3) must also work smarter, together and provide mobile car shoppers with the relevant ads that actually answer their search queries - ads that provide the lease payments, finance offers and incentives. Then, they need to drive those shoppers to the content with those offers.

The entire shopping process of outdated, takes too long and is very frustrating for shoppers. (And I’m not talking about being able to buy cars online - that’s still, at least, a few years away from mass acceptance)
