Can I Change Animation Style with EbSynth?

In this video, I use the style-transfer software EbSynth on animated footage to see if we can change the style using a single reference frame. I use my favorite clips from the Simpsons and try some weird techniques to see how the software will interpret them.

This video is NOT sponsored. I really wanted to try out the software and see what interesting things we could make.

EbSynth is technically not an artificial intelligence software, It uses style transfer to get its results.

You can get EbSynth here:

You should try to convert an ugly CG anime to a 2D style.

Imagine using this to make the Sam Raimie spiderman movies look like Into the spiderverse.
It probably wouldnt work so well but it could be neat.

Theoretically couldnt I just grab a few frames and run them through a "style transfer" program and then run those through this program for almost an entirely new stylized scene? This thing is awesome!

Does this mean you could fully render your keyframes, but just do flat shading for the in-betweens?
That could save a lot of time!

Beautiful! Appreciate the time you put into this, precious information. 🙏🏻

This looks pretty cool, and I hope it becomes even more impressive in the future.
As for now, it seems like an animator would have to do a bit of extra work just to use it. I'm not sure how practical it would be in that regard.

Im very dissapointed by the ending of your video, was expecting your outro to be an animated painted version of yourself

Wow this really makes that "Loving Vincent" movie look easy to make

Holy crap this can help independent creators. Imagine just one creator making a series by very basically animating something and painting every major change in the animation or movements. Or maybe a collaboration between two or more where one artist animated and the other paints and you can put them together to create beautiful animations. This can also help costs with shows and can offer more cost viable art styles.

I can see so many animated media being remastered with that technology

This is actually realy disturbinlgy useful for general animation. being able to render a hyper detailed shadow and then apply it to everything in the shot is nutts.

Apparently it doesn't use AI according to the channel "two minutes paper"

I'm very tempted to try this for 3D->2D anime style

Blender is still annoying to figure out and tweak normals for exact shadow shaping, so I honestly wouldn't mind hand shading 4 or 5 frames out of a 30 frame animation to make sure my shadows and lines look exactly how I want

some professional uses for this really is shooting live-action and then stylizing it
its a massive game changer and a very powerful creative tool that's being used fantastically by creators like Joel Haver
god I love that man

for those with no digital painting skills: run your keyframes through the ai that can stylise images based upon an input material. it can have really realistic results for different artistic styles and could then be fed into the animation AI to do this type of work rather fast!

It kinda reminds of the new art style of the newer Spongebob movies. And that's a good thing!
