Springsteen live in Berkeley 1978 - HISTORICAL CONCERT/HQ AUDIO

The earliest show on the Darkness tour to be released in the Archive Series, Berkeley 7/1/78 bristles with energy on songs like “Darkness On The Edge Of Town” and “Adam Raised A Cain,” along with “Night” and “For You,” both of which featured in the early months of the ’78 tour. A memorable encore opens with Bruce’s definitive solo-piano arrangement of “The Promise”, the first live version of the song to be released from 1978, and offers only the second E Street Band performance ever of “Because The Night,” with alternate lyrics.

I saw Bruce and the E-Streeters on this tour at the Omaha Music Hall on June 14, 1978. Bruce and I gave each other 5 (slapped palms) when he came into the audience during Spirits In The Night. The very same setlist in Omaha that is in this concert.

Thank you for posting this. I was second row center with three friends. I had missed the BTR concert in Berkeley and was determined not to make that mistake again. I lived in SF and heard tix were going on sale on a Sunday at noon, so went early to the stereo electronics store on Geary which also served as a ticket outlet. There were two people in line - none were in line for Bruce tix!! The store opened up a bit earlier than noon so I my order went in but I was disappointed that I got Row BB tix which I assumed meant two rows after Row Z. I couldn’t believe it when the usher walked me up to the front and asked “Close enough for you?” What I most acutely remember when he launched into Badlands was how how loud it was and Bruce’s self assured face of “Folks, you do not know what you’re in for.” His parents and sister were in the audience. He talked a lot and much of the audience had been there the night before, so it was very communal. After the show, my friend and I walked to our cars and he turned to me and said, “I could die happily right now.” I felt the same. But a few months later, he came back to do two shows at Winterland Ballroom! Of course, I was at both shows!

Brilliant. Just one small gripe, the right word here is "historic", not "historical". Finally, plenty official recordings of 1978 shows coming out! It seems all the legal and financial hassles of the time prevented Bruce and the Band from coming to Europe. I was at the historic first London gig in 1975, and the (locally) historic first show in Barcelona (I'd recently moved to live in Catalonia) in 1981. My, ehem, younger friends are hellish jealous...!

Before he starts Darkness, Bruce talks about a book that influenced him. WHAT was that book?
