In this video, we are answering the question... is prompt engineering going to become the new software engineering? There has been a lot of speculation from leaders in tech around how generative AI will impact coding. We will be breaking it down today as to what this might look like.

It’s like saying that by using prompts, you can become an artist or a writer. Tools can improve your skills, but the only real path to greatness is hard work. Coding will always matter and the way we do it is always evolving.

It's also convenient for him that his company is counting on AI for a lot of their future growth. It's kind of like the CEO of Toyota encouraging people to be drivers instead of taking public transport.

If using language models to build software, prompt engineers will still have to know how to program in the same way someone using a graphing calculator will need to know math.

I will not stop learning to code but keep evolving in learning, and it could be a misnomer or a dangerous thing to sensitize people to stop coding as the requirement for secure coding/programming will become standard in the software industry. Reducing or eliminating the vulnerability score must have human input. Yes, Artificial Intelligence can code but we as humans must review the code, guide the continuous deployment and integration.

I think people are forgetting about the alignment issue. We don’t program these models, we train them. We already have the “black box” issue where we don’t even understand how these things work on a concrete implementation level. Think of this…. Imagine ants created humans, but we were unaware for whatever reason…. Then humans construct highways, tunnels, building etc…. We wouldn’t have it out for the ants or hate them per se, but we probably would be oblivious to the fact that the thing we built to suit our needs resulted in the death of millions of ants. AGI and ASI are lofty goals but we should pause and verify we don’t allow these things to build our own undoing. Knowing what these machines are building and how their implementations work is going to be crucial to safety and stability.

How do you know the code the AI generated is doing what you need, within the constraints that you need? how do you know is performant enough, how do you know is secure. You still need to code.

O well sometimes it helps to use gpt. Just to get you near the right track. Or to fine tune your code. Thats for now in this time and place. But it will get better. And yes to start out with code will get harder. But for good prompts you need to know how to code and how to connect the dots.

Fascinating take on AI's role in evolving software engineering! It underscores the importance of innovation and continuous learning in our industry.

I believe AI is amazing when it comes to helping you develop a product on your own. I am working on my own plugin. Right now the AI tools I've tried are not great when it comes to Revit API ( the API I mostly work with), but in terms of more standard knowledge, it really managed to fill some gaps for me. As a self-taught developer, I am extremely happy about that. I guess all of us will have to be a bit of a prompt engineer in the future, just as more and more people have some developer skills to help their work in their own industry.

Any suggestions on what tech areas should creative people consider to study?

I'm using a MacBook Air M1 with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. I want to perform cat vs. dog classification using Keras and TensorFlow. How can I do this on Google Colab? Will it work fine on my MacBook? Additionally, is Jupyter Notebook suitable for this task? On my Mac
For doing or practicing deep learning machine learning, where can I do on my mac

people definitely will need to know how to code in order to validate the code A.I. generates, and coders will need to know Prompt Engineering to maintain all the A.I. tools companies are looking to add to enhance efficiency.

Great take, but personally I see prompt engineering (in the context of coding) almost like coding in a natural language, which is just worse than any other language IMHO. There is a reason lawyers exist, natural language can be really vague, unlike existing programming languages which are well-defined and also wildly more efficient for the computer to parse. Therefore, I don't think we'll code in a natural language, but continue to use the AI tools to maybe speed up our workflow

We will always need a person in the loop behind the AI and Gen AI space to validate regardless of how advance it grows to be.

Thanks for sharing, I have been going back and forth on this trying to decide whether or not to finally learn python or just go prompt engineering. Been in IT for a w3hile but really want to code, maybe cloud developer. I just havbe the feeling coding is gonna be around for a bit and prompt engineering will maybe be a good addition.

Software Engineering is going to be with us for the foreseeable future. The nature of the available roles and associated tools are going to change significantly. We don't use punch card readers anymore to input our code. Perhaps in the future, we may not need text-based IDEs to build software.

What is the purpose of documentation writing? (Sorry noob here)
