I love a Masquerade Ball, the glamour, the intrigue, but I never knew they were as old as they were! The fantabulousness of the Masked Ball fascinates me!

I love the research for these history snippets and love to produce these videos out.
Hope you enjoy them.

Oh, yes. We have the yearly Bal du rat Mort - Ball of the Dead Rat - at the Casino here, the only instance where people are permitted to walk the streets masked. There's always a theme, like 'Brasil' or whatever. I'd love to see a 'Poe' theme. Judging from the costumes people put in a lot of work and dough. Oh, and the 'naughtiness' is definitely part and parcel of the festivities. I wonder whether the Ball will be on the agenda next year. If one can't dance and be naughty, where's the fun, right?

I think it was the Roman historian Pliny who first described a masquerade ball in which the party goers were dressed as beasts and demi-gods and cavorted about drunkenly. The closest I ever came to cavorting was a Halloween party when I was 8 years old, dressed as a foil covered robot. Fun times, except for when it came time to bob for apples.

Great informing video. Not quite the same thing but it involves a mask, I saw Batman in a Bat mobile a couple of weekends back. The beaky bit reminded me. The Bat mobile was based on the 1960's TV series car and he was diving along the front in Plymouth. I tried to get a photo but he had gone passed before I could get my phone out. Not something you see every day especially in lockdown. Cheers, keep up the good work.

Oh, my word, it's Rebecca's alter-ego... I would love to rock up at Tesco wearing a Venetian plague mask!

Hi Rebecca, started watching after following you and Paul's "Every Disused Station" series. I recall somewhere in the dim distant past, wasnt those masks with the "beak" like yours originally called plague masks as they used to fill the beak with herbs and other smelly things to try and stop the smell of the dead being breathed in. I think originally they thought the vapours from the herbs would actually keep them safe from the plague, falsely as it turned out. Great idea for a series, looking forward to more soon. Best regards Dave.
