The fear isn't going after the active shooter, the fear is the police being amped up on acorns and killing you because you have a firearm. Remember Colorado?

My father, years ago, I’ll never forget it, …He had just preached a sermon at our church, we were driving home for Sunday lunch—all 6 of us—and he saw a man on the side of the road, car broken down, but also lookin kinda crazy, he pulls over, spoke to the man, and said “I’m gonna help you, but I’m taking my wife and kids home first. If you’re still here when I get back, I’ll do whatever needs to be done to help you.” And he did. This just made me think of that.

One fear I have as a defender is mistaking a fellow defender for the bad guy when they just happened to be doing exactly what I am doing and trying to save lives. Vice versa too. Them mistaking me as the bad guy.

I’ll never forget one of my Drill SGT back in reception. While filling up the whole paperwork he was saying “I know we fight for this country and in a situation of an active shooter and I am in my uniform I’ll try to defend the people from him in any way possible, but without my uniform on, i’m no hero, I’m saving me and my family”

When I think of the military, this is the man I think about along with all the other brave souls I thank you for your service. My grandfather fought in World War II. My dad was in the Navy. My stepdad was in the Navy generation X, I was in out of rehab all my life. I never had my crap together, probably gone in the military too. I have a special place in my heart for military very grateful to live in America. I was born here. I’ll die here.

We had a shooting at our mall in Naples Florida. I took my family out of a far exit, made our way to a main round and double timed to our truck. Unlike Tim, I stayed with my family and left.

There were 4 Armed Vets at the Oregon college shooting. They did not try to go in and take down the active shooter, they said it plain and simple "if you are in an Active shooter scenario and you have a Gun, you will be seen as a threat and dealt with first then ask questions later."

Many years ago before "active shooters" was even in our vocabulary we were instructed by our command staff that if we were ever dispatched to a gunman in a building or school building, wait for SWAT or SERT. After the Colorado shooting, I vowed that I would NEVER STAND BY at a school shooting, even if I had to go alone. I was a K9 Officer at the time and was mistakenly given a Grand Master Key by our city manager so we could do some late night training in the schools. That key opened every single lock at all of the schools and city buildings in our town. I considered that to be a golden key. A few days later the manager asked me to return the key and I told him I lost it. What I really did was go to a trusted locksmith and he made me nine copies. He understood why I requested copies and I passed them out to other officers that I knew would use them in an emergency. A few years later the city manager caught wind of my "keygate: incident. I found myself in a meeting with the Chief, Mayor, the city manager, the head of HR and our union rep. The Mayor and manager came unglued and wanted me fired and charged with some type of theft. The Chief pointed out that the Mayor and the manager both had kids in the school system. And if they insisted that the officers no longer had access to the schools or city buildings, especially during a mass shooting, this would be on their heads. He also surmised that since I would no longer be a city employee, he would be worried that I might contact the local news outlets. I was dismissed and the meeting ended a few minutes later. The next day the Chief asked that I add the key to my city property list and "Keygate" went away. LOL Fortunately, we never had a mass shooting before I retired and I am thankful for that.

We had a shooting at our state fair about 50yrds from me and my family. Complete chaos and stampede. I was conceal carrying. I got the wife and kids TF outta then. Later our extended family questioned why I didn’t draw my pistol. Preservation of life comes first.

I think about this a lot. As someone who is armed and trained, I feel a moral obligation to be a first line of defense. But getting family/friends to safety to is priority 1.

I am not a military man but I can honestly say I would do the exact same thing. We all saw what happened in uvalde. That town is my neighbor and my own mother was involved with the case trying to find out why the police did absolutely nothing for an hour while countless children were injured and killed. I could not live with myself knowing I have the absolute capabilities to find and neutralize the threat and didn’t. Family first, then the strangers. It’s up to us the citizens to keep eachother safe. We can no longer count on our forces. Police. And the others who say they’re here to protect and defend. (Not including the military).

I expect no less of great men. I saw it in action. We had a situation and my father ensured we were ok and out of the place and went back straight to the situation. I suffered waiting for him to be ok, but after everything I couldn’t feel more proud to have been raised by such great honorable human being. There is nothing I wouldn’t do for him knowing the kind of person he is.

My close friend and I was having this same conversation. Keep in mind they all are ex military and war veterans! The issue is for us is the police will not know who’s the good guy or bad guy! We all agreed it’s best to save who came with you and if someone else relies you’re a good guy decides to leave with us that’s fine. But I’m protecting my family only!

Facts. You do have a responsibility to the people around you if you're capable of helping, but your first responsibility is always to your family.
