It’s called production carpentry. Larry Haun was a master at production carpentry. He always used to say that it’s better to scribe than to measure. That’s if you are concerned about speed and accuracy.

Had a boss teach me the same 15 years ago! Its a time efficient method but it also saves on gaps and creates tighter cuts. 😊

As the painter that may come behind you, I say hell yeah! Caulk is for hiding the slightest hint of a joint! As a homeowner that does my boss’s (read wife’s) to do list, that’s a good tip. Before someone replies, I’m a professional painter with over three decades in the trade and I’ve ran through thousands of tubes of caulk going behind the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Most of the time I can do a complete project and maybe have to pull out the tape measure maybe a time or two at the most. That’s because I learned the lessons taught by the very efficient carpenter, Larry Haun.

Weirdly, as a doityourselfer I have always done this as it's easier than using a tape. When I first started out doing stuff around the house I didn't know how to use a tape to measure stuff like this so I just made "witness" marks.

I tell every apprentice I have; know what you're doing, but take every opportunity to get out of your own way.

That's called "scribing." It's the only way old school tile men mark tile.

after he was done marking it sounded like he had to stop himself from saying "now I'm gonna measure it" lol

This assumes you always have a small cutoff piece to work with. Typically, you're cutting from a long board.

Thats called scribing the board. And any experience carpenter would know that.

Yeah, but how long does it take to learn when you're using it unecessesarily?
