FNM got so bad at my LGS they gave out old promos from previous sets to everyone that showed up.

FNM will no longer be the same for me and many other of my friends. On Saturday, February 10th, my LGS, where many friends and great memories were made, will be closing for good. It was the place where I first learned how to draft, where I first got into Commander, and where I eventually took my wife to learn how to play MTG. We will never forget it, but FNM just won't be the same. 😢

Commander/draft player here. I got more excited getting foil tokens, such as saproling or treasure than for ex. Renegade rallier. I think FNM promo's have to playable. They dont have to be expensive, just cards people would put in their decks. Even a few commons fnm promo's such as Opt.

Watching this about a year after the changes, I am not only happy to see that they went back to old promos, but made them much better. Even though they are cheap, I love me some foil opts.

Restricting FNM promos to Standard is a bad idea. I would love to have some foil promos for my Pauper, Modern, or Commander decks. Also, it can still be promo lands or tokens like you mentioned Professor. I think it would be fine if they want to mix it up some. If a promo land has really great art and is foil, I probably will want it for my collection. Many people enjoy customizing their decks to their own liking. About Hearthstone, you are right and I would add that Hearthstone cannot even touch MTG's superior game play, not even close.
