Everyone knew they would be seeing Lara Croft again after the success of the first game. The second game is mostly just more of the same. Lara is out to find the Dagger of Xian, and saving the world. The game has improved graphics that allow for better environments and character models. While the game is an improvement, it mostly more of the same and doesn't change the formula.

I LOVED this series. In fact, I think most of the games from this era are better than most of today's games. I don't mean in a TECHNICAL sense, but these games were much DEEPER in terms of entertainment and scope.
While today's games look and sound superior, they aren't as innovative or awe inspiring.
When was the last time you were blown away by a game in the same way you were with games like Tomb Raider, Syphon Filter, Resident Evil, or Silent Hill? I'm not saying there aren't great games today, but games like the ones I mentioned are rare.
Developers only seem to be interested in technical advancements, rather than innovative gameplay. There aren't too many games that take you on a quest in the way Tomb Raider, Syphon Filter, Resident Evil or Silent Hill did.

Tomb Raider 2 is a perfect TR game because it's gameplay has unique things.

Eidos are 100% to blame for all the problems you mentioned. Core design were all about going in creative directions and taking risks but Eidos and the marketing department weren't interested in that whatsoever.
The only thing they cared about was "a Tomb Raider every Christmas". Revenue revenue revenue. I sincerely hope they got the Konami treatment once Square bought them out.

I just picked that Game up recentley and I played it for the first time. It is a great Game.
I really start to get into the Tomb Raider Games now. ;-)

I love how alot of time and detail have gone into each of the levels of this classic but I really hated the oil rig levels. I particularly enjoyed the monastery levels I swear those monks are awesome helping lara take out the bad guys made for a nice change!

Same here, the third especially killed it for me with its insane difficulty and lack of innovation that I was unknowingly craving by this point. At the time I remember having to follow the guide step-by-step to progress in the game, which I didn't find particularly fun (but then, repeated trial-and-error never is).

This game will always remain in my opinion, the best TR game ever!!! After TR2, number #1 comes in second place!!! I didn really enjoy #3 that much, the level desihn wal terrible, the game was too dark....bla! #4 was better!!

TR 2 for me was the best of all the TR games. Its the single reason i sold my Sega Saturn and went out and got a Playstation.

If this game was an excellent sequel, I wonder why it didn't get rereleased in a anniversary edition like the first game was? Sure, it was more of the same as the first, but I think this would've been great to release for the Xbox 360.

Now this is my favorite TR. 3 has regained my interest but goddamn those save crystals and how easy it is to get lost in the world is intimidating and frustrating.

Maybe it's nostalgia but I prefer the first Tomb Raider because it was the game that really surprised me, was centered more on puzzles. But this sequel is also fantastic! good video, thanks!
