Hematuria: causes and evaluation of blood in your urine

Hematuria is the medical name for blood in the urine. Hematuria can be visible (called gross), or only visible by a microscope. There are many causes of hematuria including infections, inflammation, trauma, stones, and tumors. Dr. Reznicek from Pacific Northwest Urology Specialists describes some of the many causes of hematuria as well as the recommended workup.

Workup usually consists of imaging of the kidneys and the bladder and then a cystoscopic examination (camera into the bladder).

I have microscopic hematuria. Went to a urologist today and he did a full work up. Did a Ct scan and nothing showed, full examination nothing abnormal. Next is a cystoscopy. Also sent my urine to a cytology. Praying it’s nothing major. 🙏

Thank you for explaining what I'm going through. I wish the doctor could have explained this to me and what the next steps should be. I will get the evaluation of my bladder in a week. I pray it's not cancer. I can relax a bit because I can understand now what is going to happen.

Thank you so much, I've been looking for this, my husband who is 82 years old has been waiting for a gallbladder removal operation for over 8 months now, the call finally came in, the surgeon called him the hospital wanted more tests and he got all the tests and now they want to put aside the operation until they solve the kidney problems according to his scan, he was sent same day to another hospital and that's when he got a catheter put in and he has been peeing blood ever since, it's been 3 days now, the urine is red like tomato juice I can't see any pee just red liquid. He is in pain with this thing and he was told he would have to have the catheter for a period of 3 months until he gets his operation in his prostate gland. However he will be getting his gallbladder removed in about 7 days because the urologist said it was okay to go ahead with the gallbladder removal. Then he will have to go through his prostate operation in 3 months. I find this is not right 3 months of pain, 3 months of not eating because he is not hungry much. Don't know what to do, do you have any advice. He is in constant pain for 3 days now with this catheter, I don't know what to do, can you give advice please.

My mom had blood in her urine and abdominal pain so she went to the doctor to get checked out and he just told her it was an infection and sent her home, he didn’t even take a urine test.

I had a hysterectomy and the couple of time I pee for urine dip I show blood . The doc sent my urine out for urinalysis with reflex and microscopic and urine cx. Came back no infection but there was small blood with rbc of 3-5 . She said not to worry to much as it’s small . I have a kidney and bladder ultrasound in 2 weeks I’m so nervous cause I have bad medical anxiety
