How to succeed as an introvert at work?
Please keep in mind, it is rare for anyone to be 100% introvert. It is more likely they are an ambivert or how I like to call it- a mesovert- which is to say somewhere half way through to extrovert (for example I know I am an introvert but I come across as ambivert)
Having said that these are a few tried and tested approaches which can help you be successful as an introvert at work.
1. Instead of small talk, use these effective rapport building techniques:
Offer Compliments. This shifts the attention from you to the other person. It is a win-win.
Ask questions about the other person. This helps you build rapport, helps you to get the know the colleague and they will appreciate your interest in them as a person.
To build effective rapport and genuine relationships you also need to share about yourself. I know you can’t stand shallow conversations or topics. You can share in the most authentic way by talking about things that are meaningful to you.
2. Self-promotion at work does not come easy for introverts. It is probably the most difficult thing to do. However this can be overcome by starting small and building up by improving a little bit each day, just like working out and eating healthy.
Instead of blatantly self-promoting your self, talk about your hobbies and passions and things you are good at. This helps you open up and share about yourself in an authentic way that lets your personality shine through and highlights your strengths, accomplishments or things you are great at.
Also, if you are not doing so already, writing and sending a weekly management report to your direct line manager about the work you’ve completed in the current week and what you’ll work on the following week could be a first great step into building that self-promotion muscle. Plus this would help your direct line manager a lot and you will win bonus points for that. Another big win-win which you can implement easily right away.
I made a video on how to implement weekly status update reports effectively, you can find it here:
3. Always try and increase visibility at work. Connect with and make yourself visible to people in the organisation outside your direct line manager or immediate team. Networking can be very easy to do especially when you start in a new organisation or role by just setting up a few minutes for a video conference call or in person meeting where you get to know your work colleagues. It is also a great idea to identify at least one sponsor at work. Sponsors are people who you have an affinity with, you respect and admire and you have made yourself visible to them and have been useful or helpful to them in at least one occasion and they trust you so much so that the can and will recommend you for a promotion inside or outside the organisation. Cultivating sponsors at work is a great skill you can build to help you reach your goals faster.
