The Ancient Cosmic Spirituality of Aboriginal Australians

The great Swiss psychologist and student and colleague of Sigmund Freud, Carl Jung, was obsessed with the Australian Aborigine.

Jung also estimated that the Australian Aborigine spent three to four hours a day meeting their survival needs.

But where Jung felt that the Australian Aborigines were unique among the world’s indigenous peoples was how they utilised the overwhelming majority of their time.

According to Jung, they spent that time almost exclusively cultivating a higher state of consciousness.

Or, in Jungian terms: they spent the vast majority of their time contacting and immersing themselves in the collective unconscious.

Now, it is not unusual for the Earth’s indigenous people to endeavour to raise their consciousness or to make contact with so-called spiritual realms.

However, the Australian Aborigines used every spare moment for consciousness-raising. Jung, among others, estimated that they spent ¾ of their lives doing this.

And, like the New Zealand Maori, the Australian Aborigine did not use any psychoactive plants to assist them.
Instead, the way in which they cultivated a higher consciousness was exclusively through the practice of art.

Story, music, song, dance & painting were the methods that Australian Aborigines used.

All of these were practised and performed so that they might more deeply dwell in what they knew as: The Dreaming.

The Dreaming

The Dreaming: The now-moment, beyond the historical, always Now, only apparently Then. The moment before the existence of time when Nothing became Something.
The Australian Aborigine’s Dreaming is primarily a creation myth. And, like ALL creation myths, from the ancient Indian Vedas to the
Judeo-Christian myth of Genesis, it points to that ‘moment’ before Time
where Nothing produced Something.

All culture's creation myths, including the scientific explanation called “The Big Bang,” point to, or attempt to explain this relation between Nothing & Something.

“May as well be here, we are as where we are.” - Australian Aboriginal Proverb

Regarding "concept of space" i was into my 20's and thought i had a grasp on my indigenous friends, neighbours and family, beliefs and one day we sat around by the creek and started playing spot that in the sky, i kept looking, they would say lizard, bird etc, i couldn't see it.
So after a while one old lady said 'oh look a big fish is swimming through', The kids clapped, so i looked again at the clouds, nothing.
I asked her where ? what cloud looks like a fish ?
She replied, "not the cloud, the blue sky between the clouds".
*Concept of space shifts.
And just like that i could see a blue fish swimming between the grey and white "water/clouds".
I learned a lot about perception that day.

This is incredible. As an older white Australian I’ve learnt more from this video than I learnt about aboriginal culture my whole life in Australia. What has happened here is obscene. I hope that as much of their incredible cultures as possible can be preserved going forward.

I love seeing the "hi, a white aussie here" comments because it shows they want to learn about their country's indigenous people and their culture and they also point out that the educational system has failed to teach about them. that's just something I wanted to point out and appreciate

This is a very interesting video, and I enjoyed watching it. I wish to add some additional information and I feel it must be pointed out that there’s a common misconception that Indigenous Australians were a homogeneous monoculture, when in reality before European contact, there were more than 500 groups which comprised of subgroups with thousands of different dialects. Some were mutually intelligible and others were vastly different. Tribal groups suffered greatly in language, culture, lifestyle, how they hunted, the regions and climate they lived in. It’s similar to lumping all Europeans as one group. They might on the surface appear similar, but a German would not have the same culture as someone from Portugal.

The coastal Eora people and their sub-groups would have very little in common with the desert dwelling Arrernte peoples. Their diet, their dwellings, tools and weapons, language, clothing, songs, stories, lore, and dreaming are via vastly different.

Australia has such a rich culture in our Indigenous people. I’m proud of my own indigenous heritage, through my father who is a Wiradjuri man. I may have my mothers white skin and European features, but I do feel a spiritual connection to my country and am extremely proud of my heritage and the history of my father’s people.

Seventh generation white Australian here. I've been lucky to have Aboriginal teachers, and people have no idea how rich the culture is spiritually. It has to be experienced to be understood. The fact that they weren't recognized for the sophisticated knowledge holders they are by an invasive, ignorant people who had and still have no respect for the land/reality is sad and shameful. I only hope to see the Aboriginal people at last given the sovereign status they deserve from others.

I forget just how obsessed I was with Australia as a young child (I'm American)... it's like a black hole of the human culture, with that gravity, a subtle place with more than meets the eye, something extremely ab-normal and ab-original about it... there's something really deep there. Given the Aboriginal spirituality, it wouldn't be a surprise that someone like me would be drawn to it like this.

Just consider, workdays of 3-4 hours, and no manager shouting, "use your spare time to increase targets." The West is insane! Use your extra time for joy, love, art, exploration, consideration and connection with nature. Simple. Rich.

Please show an Australian desert if you’re talking about Indigenous Australian culture; Aboriginal people lived in some of the coldest climates as well- Tasmania and the Great Dividing Range from Stanthorpe to Orbost.
