Another Konami game comes to the Arcade Archives. After this game, I hope that Parodius Da, Fantastic Parodius, Twinbee Yahho, Sexy Parodius, Gradius 4 and Salamander 2 can come to the Arcade Archives as well.

Released in November of 1988 and running on the Konami Twin 16 which also runs other Arcade Archive alumnus such as Cue Brick, Gradius II, and Dark Adventure, The Final Round is a boxing game inspired by a certain movie franchise where the goal is to fight your way to the top and battle the top contender in the Konami Boxing Association for the heavyweight championship title.

Players begin by selecting their attributes, which are split into 3 subjects:

* Power = Determines the strength of the player's punches and how much damage they can do.

* Stamina = Determines the player's endurance which reduces the amount of damage the player receives when hit by the opponent.

* Speed = Determines the velocity of the player's movement.

After customizing Jabbin Jim (player 1) or Gentleman Joe (player 2), it's off to the ring.

Control wise, the player used an 8 way joystick for movement and three buttons which consist of a Head Punch, Body Punch, and Block.

Every match consists of 3 rounds lasting 3 minutes each, and the methods of victory are similar to real boxing which consists of Knock Out or KO for short (beating an opponent and having him fail to get back up before the count of 10), Technical Knock Out or TKO for short(knocking the opponent to the ground 3 times), or by Judge's Decision at the end of a match.

During the match, players can execute special punches that are randomly done. Should a player find himself being knocked down, they have until the count of 10 to get back up by repeatedly wiggling the joystick and mashing the buttons, which was a mechanism that would be adopted by various Konami side scrolling brawlers including Crime Fighters, Vendetta, and it's intellectual property based games such as The Simpsons and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Once a set number of matches are won, the player can engage in a bonus game where they can enhance their attributes:

* Stamina Training consists of the player hopping over a rod that will progressively move faster the better the player is with their timing of their jumps.

* Power Training: The player is centered and must react quickly to the machines that will spit out medicine balls, which the player must punch.

* Speed Training: The Player who is on an octagonal panel must punch targets that pop up on the sides in what is pretty much a take on Whack a Mole (and this would inspire the shooting bonus stage in Sunset Riders).

One gimmick that is taken from Capcom's Street Fighter is that at any moment, a second player can join in and battle the player currently in the game.
