The Atlanta Hawks came off an eastern conference finals appearance in the 2021 playoffs, where they were 2 games away from the NBA finals. Since then...they've regressed and are struggling to even make the playoffs. What happened?

The east got significantly better with everyone moving around pieces and making moves while the hawks sat idle. Everyone around them got better while they just stagnated.

Atlanta thought having traded for good offensive players with a good defensive coach would ended up solve their problems in both ends of the floor. But there's no balance in what they are doing. They maybe got Lucky with the poor performance of Philly last year, but they need to focus in both ends of the floor.

Hawks need perimeter defense. This seems to be a key reason for their struggles this season, as perimeter defense is what they need next to Trae Young. This offseason, the Hawks need to add a standout perimeter defender somehow, whether it be through the draft, trade, or free agency. That is the key to improving the Atlanta Hawks next season, as that has what has been revealed this season.

Great video, you came to the same conclusions as me from watching most games. Our offense is great because Trae is great, but defensively any decent offensive guard or wing tears through us. Surrounding Trae with shooters like Huerter, Bogi and Gallinari maximizes Trae's passing abilities when teams send multiple guys to guard him, but any positives are canceled out on the other end. If we could keep a couple of those shooters and trade the others for a defensive wing/guard and another playmaker, we could get back to where we were last year. Until then we will be a fun team to watch that never makes it past the first round.

Yeah they were definitely riding that high on winning last season. I remember earlier in the season Trae said something like, "the regular season is boring. I miss the playoffs." That mentality is super toxic and it's clearly showing in their standings.

Hawks may reach same level as previous year easily if they got second man that carries the load with Trae and defensive minded guard-forward like Thybulle.

Collins is offensive first power forward and it's not possible to remain competitive by having weak backcourt defensive power. He may be traded also.

Glad you made this a topic to discuss. I called the Hawks making the ECF last year before the playoffs started (definitely not a fluke). Also believe if it wasn't for injuries they make the finals. However, I have been very disappointed in the hawks to say i had them going to the ECF again at the beginning of the season. In my defense, i thought they were actually going to play their rookies (Johnson & Cooper), who i believe were very good pick ups and exactly what we were missing, a backup pg and all around wing. I think stagnant is the best word, even with the coaching. I think we are scared to switch it up because it was so successful last year but we need to make a change

Just so you wall know, that same game Trae put up 56pts, 14asts. Trae also gave up 40+ pts to the opposing PG Anfernee Simons and the Hawks lost the game. Putting up major stats on Offense is nice and all, but it's still only half the game. You have to play Defense too.

As a hawks fan I can say that they overachieved last season & alot of injuries happened last year in the playoffs.. & they had alot of momentum when Coach McMillan was their interm coach. Seen alot of games in person & they look lost out there & rely on Trae Young too much

Hawks took advantage of the weaker east, especially as the top teams were exhausted last year.

I firmly believe nothing is wrong with them. They just overachieved last season. Remember they weren't a top seed nor a top team. They would've lost to Philly if Simmons didn't completely freeze up.

The reason is due to other teams (76ers, Nets, Heat, Bulls, etc) has significantly improved, while the Hawks basically signed same team last season.
