I wish people understood the joy of having your own food. Even if it’s just herbs, it saves you money and brings you happiness win-win situation.

I went to the dollar general store and boght a plastic kiddo pool for $10 and filled it with about 8 inches of good soil. I sprinkled arugula lettuce seeds in it and covered with peat moss. I now have about 50 plants coming up! I will probably have to thin them out to other pots but it worked great for a 5 ft wide container! I am excited to have organic lettuce to pick and not pay thru the nose for it at the store! Love the herb garden idea too!

Never despise small beginnings, they always lead to bigger things❤

Please don't put mint into the same container. It will over grow everything else.

I live at a retirement community, one bedroom apartments with a back porch, lots of containers thrown away. Plastic pots to storage tubs. Planted a sweet potato that had sprouted in one last week. Put wild onions in one last year, just like in the wild they came back up this spring. Restaurants will give you 5 gal. buckets and they are food safe. In winter put reg.soil in a large container put eggshells & other compost in it through the winter. In spring sift out things not broken down, great to use as fertilizer mix with reg soil. Don't just use alone may burn you plant's hope this helps someone!

I'm in grow zone 7b, SC/NC border near Charlotte, and our cash crops that are yearly growing, rosemary, sage, Greek oregano, parsley, cilantro, lavender, onions, garlic, quinoa, kales, collards, leafy greens. Plus I live in a self made plastic sheeting greenhouse, growing everything I can and early sprouts for the seasonal plants, plus I raise quail in there as my roommates, and they eat various pests, bugs and give plants natural fertilizer. We also raise chickens for our garden fertilizer/mulch. Silkies or bantam chickens are great for people with little space, quail are amazing for even smaller spaces. Thanks for sharing.

Honey you did awesome, my grandma taught me to garden in Minnesota we had 5 acres of garden we did by hand every summer, got us through those rough winters. She lived to be 103 yo. So don't tell me that fresh is not the best !!!!

I grow mine in an oversized ornamental barrel planter someone left on the side 9f the road. Amazing how little a person actually needs to grow herbs at home. Simple to seed, just need soil, water a bit of feed now and then, and some of them can actually be strong enough to come back year after year, even after being left out for the winter

Put big rocks on bottom, then sand, then your soil mix to keep your plant from getting root rot. 👍👍

I don't know why it took me so long to do this, but I just planted mine a month ago! So smart to just go to one planter for everything!

Also double check for coplanting things like thyme and basil, as basil will want a lot of water and less sandy soil, whereas thyme will want less water and more sandy soil. Thyme, oregano, and rosemary will grow well together, as will lavender.

Love it but I’d drill the holes on the sides about an inch from the bottom and than some water would always be there in the bottom to keep the plants watered!

I would put a liner in that galvanized tub, to prevent any chance of zinc poisoning.

Food grade buckets from bakeries and restaurants are the best. Easy to use and no lead or zinc leaching

You can get a 17 gallon rope handle tub for $10 or less also. Don't forget to drill holes on the bottom.

Definitely would like a soil breakdown as well as ideas on where to find good soil for good deals, but great idea overall and great edit - super clear and easy to follow

Right on Lady and 86 the mint it will outgrow everything else in the tub. Plant the mint by itself its an invasive plant.

I grow my herbs and watermelon right out of the bag of soil. No need to spend money on pots.
