Restoring the original PlayStation (PS1) - Vintage Console restoration & repair

This Original PlayStation was sent to me to be restored and repaired by a subscriber who didn't have any use for it.

I will restore this broken and yellowed PlayStation. The console doesn't read discs, which is a very common and easily fixable issue with these old consoles.

First, I remove 6 security screws from the base to allow me to separate the two halves then once inside I can start to take it apart properly, first, I removed the power switch then the cartridge ejection lever I then removed all the screws from the motherboard and removed it from the lower casing.

During the disassembly, I found the remains of a spider and a spider nest. It's very common I find bugs inside these old devices, I'm, not sure why, maybe they're dark and warm places?

The capacitor was swollen, in all cases, swelling is due to the buildup of internal gases as part of progressing failure mechanisms. A failing electrolytic capacitor typically generates hydrogen gas as the electrolyte solution begins breaking down. This causes a build-up of internal gas pressure which swells the case.

To fix the disc drive I only had to clean the lens. In some cases, the laser has gone old. You can try adjusting the screw I show to give it more life. It increases the voltage going to the laser and if it's adjusted to the highest voltage at the factory the laser would burn out faster.

I then washed the plastics in soapy water to remove all grime and grease in preparation for the next step which was to soak them in Cream Peroxide Developer 40 Volume and UV light for several days to remove the years of yellowing that has taken place, this process is also known as retr0brite.

How to remove yellowing from old plastic (retro bright) the BEST method

How to fix cracked plastic

I will show you how to remove the yellowing from vintage plastics with the Retr0bright method.

This video will show you how to make your yellowed SNES look almost new again.
Coat the plastic in hydrogen peroxide to fix discoloration. Hydrogen peroxide works well on plastics that have turned entirely yellow instead of in just one spot. Fill a plastic bag with enough hydrogen peroxide to cover the plastic. Stick the plastic in the bag of hydrogen peroxide and lay it out in direct sunlight. Wait 3-4 hours before rinsing it off with clean water.
You can purchase hydrogen peroxide at a drugstore or big box store.

If you’re treating some sort of plastic mechanism, make sure you remove all the parts that aren’t plastic before putting them into the hydrogen peroxide.
You can also use an old toothbrush to scrub the hydrogen peroxide onto the plastic if desired

electrolytic capacitors
The failure of electrolytic capacitors can be hazardous, resulting in an explosion or fire. Bipolar electrolytic capacitors which may be operated with either polarity are also made, using special constructions with two anodes connected in series.

👍Well done sir. The PS1 is one of the first consoles that I purchased myself. A lot of fun times.

Great job. PS1 was the first console I ever opened, but I just replaced the shell, didn' t fix it because it was functional. I liked the UV light part, and the sabling device, the screwdriver you are using was my first type of screwdriver that I got, I have it as a set and mine is called 'Impacter'. Keep it up.

14:57 funny, but this is not SCPH-7502 as shown by the sticker. It is SCPH-1002. Cinch connectors, antenne out, and laser it's closer to PSU.

even though I started with Nintendo consoles back in the '80s, PS1 is the console of my childhood.

The strange housing and PCB is the SCPH-1002 model, and sold with the SCPH-7502 sticker 😳

This looks very fishy, no dirt or dust or lint inside, the parts look very clean, but the outside looks dirty but not, looks like its painted on you can see brush marks, iv watch a few from Restoration EG and they looked genuine, but this one looks 'fishy'?

We kinda have the same model number but mine is a 7501 model without the av ports. I already fix mine just replace the laser that's it an easy fix. the only issue I hate is the overheating that it has

Ironically, back in 2000 when I had my PS1. I also put a Pikachu sticker on it not knowing it was a Nintendo exclusive IP. I only watch the animated show but I was never a Nintendo fan, just a pure Playstation gamer.
