00:00 Jewelry Introduction
We'll provide you an overview of various jewelry styles with a brief discussion of their functions, as well as jewelry intended solely for decorative purposes.

01:22 History (Ancient to Pre-Modern)
Throughout the history of menswear, jewelry has always had a presence. Let's see how different types of jewelry have evolved.

4:02 Modern History

06:49 Most Common Types
We divide the most common types of jewelry worn by men at present into 2 categories: functional and ornamental.

07:10 1. Functional Items
We go through jewelry pieces that fulfill a task of some kind besides their aesthetic appeal.

07:20 1a. Cufflinks
Cufflinks are probably the most common form of men’s jewelry in the classic style. They are commonly grouped by their closure method:
08:27 Chain
08:41 T-Bar
09:01 Fixed Double-Sided

09:25 1b. Tie Retainers
Next, we'll look at jewelry that secures your tie in place. They also have different varieties:
09:51 Tie Tack
10:18 Stick Pin
10:34 Tie Bar
10:43 Tie Clip

11:43 1c. Collar Retainers
Collar retainers were originally intended to give soft collars a neater appearance and more regular shape. They have 3 common types:
12:06 Collar Pin
13:00 Collar Bar
13:16 Collar Clip

14:09 1d. Shirt Studs
Commonly worn with formal ensembles, let's see how these removable buttons vary.

15:32 1e. Belt Buckles
At one point, an individual belt buckle was an essential clothing component.

16:35 1f. Chains and Fobs
These implements were usually anchored to the belt, waistband, trouser pocket, or waistcoat pocket and fulfilled a variety of roles.

17:45 2. Ornamental Jewelry
This time, we discuss jewelry that doesn’t have a direct practical function but represents a more individualized style choice.

17:58 2a. Rings
From wedding rings to class rings, rings are one of the most common jewelry items.

19:34 2b. Lapel Pins
A tasteful lapel pin can also be a good alternative to boutonnieres. They give a unique visual interest and offer a chance to showcase your personality.

21:20 2c. Necklaces
While men have been wearing necklaces and chains throughout the 20th century, these articles were traditionally worn next to the skin and covered by one’s shirt.

22:28 2d. Bracelets
Bracelets are less common but are now enjoying something of a revival.

23:14 2e. Anklets
Closely related to the bracelet, anklets would follow most of the same guidelines.

23:51 2f. Earrings
Earrings are even rarer than bracelets in classic men's jewelry. In the past few decades, however, more and more men are choosing to wear earrings.

Regarding the gold and silver rings of the Northern European late iron age and viking age. These rings had a far greater importance than just being an easily moved source of wealth. These rings were given by kings and other leaders to their followers. This could happen to honour a member of the retinue or as a special reward, but often they were also of a type of binding contract. The follower who received the ring commited to serve his lord by taking it. In anglo-saxon and old norse poetry a classic kenning (i.e. a kind of description or metaphor) for lord or king is "ring-giver".
The poet Egil Skallagrimsson was given two golden rings by King Aethelstan for a poem that praised the king (among other things as "breaker of the gold", meaning he Egil called Aethelstan very generous). According to the Egils saga each ring weighed "1 mark", something that would equate to a weight of 196-214 grams (7-7, 5 oz) each. Quite a nice pay for a poem (although a bad poem could cost you your life...). :D

At my university, they were giving away pins in the shape of sunflowers in brass. It is a nice symbol (to represent thanks to the doctors and nurses in the hospitals in these harsh times) but it is also a high quality piece. I have since used them as lapel pin and I have to say, it is Very Nice indeed. The golden hue nicely contrasts the darker blue of my coat.

A good rule of thumb to me is that less means more and it’s better to be discovered instead of announced

I had a whole collection of vintage cuff links, tie bars, collar pins, and studs from my grandpa and ended up pawning a bunch of it when I was down on my luck. Such a bummer. I had a very valuable belt buckle as well. It would be cool if employers still bought luxury gifts for their workers like that. Most of the stuff was gifts from jobs he had. The police department my other grandpa worked at commissioned a solid gold revolver with a set of solid gold rounds for an anniversary of his retirement. I never hear of places doing this kind of stuff anymore. They might give you a cheap ballpoint pen from cross or something. Twitch gave a vicuña sweater as a present to a game streamer a while back. That was the first time in a while that I saw a company buy a luxury gift for an employee.

I personally wear 9 rings (one on each finger except the left ring finger as I am not married yet.) I'm a teacher and my kids, colleages and family have come to know me for my rings. I take this style from pirates and those who dress like them (Johnny depp it a good example) I always wait for the bit where TGG says to not wear too much rings😂 I do agree that a discreet minimal amount of rings fits the classic gentleman look. But it all comes down to personal preference and style. Great video as usual.👌🏻

The I.D. bracelets shown were used in addition to dog tags...Mostly they were in sterling silver, although some men had them made up in gold...the info on them could include name, rank, serial #, blood type & possibly a sentiment engraved on the back from the loved one who gifted it to the service man...the beautiful engraving done at the time itself made it a work of art...😊
