Have you ever wondered why vision therapy often isn’t covered by insurance? It’s a frustrating question that many patients ask. In this video, we dive into the four main reasons—or perhaps excuses—why insurance companies claim they won’t cover this vital service.

Here’s a quick preview of what we’ll discuss:

1️⃣ "Lack of Scientific Evidence"
Despite the abundance of research, such as the Convergence Insufficiency Treatment Trial a multi-center, randomized clinical trial conducted by the National Eye Institute (NEI) that showed that in-office vision therapy was the most effective treatment option. And studies like PEDIG on amblyopia treatment, insurance companies often dismiss vision therapy as unproven.

2️⃣ "Non-Medical Nature"
Some insurers categorize vision therapy as educational rather than medical, creating a tug-of-war between medical and educational systems. We’ll explain why this perspective undermines the multifaceted benefits of vision therapy.

3️⃣ "Lack of Medical Necessity"
Insurance companies often classify vision therapy as a "nice-to-have" treatment, much like chiropractic care, rather than essential. We’ll unpack why this is a flawed argument and how vision therapy can make a profound difference in patients’ lives.

4️⃣ "Lack of Standardization"
While individual offices may have unique approaches, the core principles of vision therapy remain consistent. We’ll address how this excuse unfairly dismisses the effectiveness of treatments.

At the heart of the matter, this issue often boils down to insurance companies prioritizing cost-cutting over patient care. However, as vision therapy providers, our commitment remains focused on delivering treatments that improve patients’ lives—whether or not insurance companies choose to cover it.
