The Meaning of Torah and Pentateuch

The words Torah and Pentateuch refer to the first five books of the Hebrew Bible (Old Testament).

The word Torah means "to teach" or "to guide" in Hebrew.

The term Pentateuch came to be used by Christians as the title for the Torah. Pentateuch means "five scrolls."

The first five books (scrolls) of the Hebrew Bible and Old Testament are:

Genesis
Exodus
Leviticus
Numbers
Deuteronomy

These books tell the story of God and the covenants he made with his people. Genesis includes the stories of Creation, Adam and Eve, Noah, and the Patriarchs. Exodus and Numbers tell the story of God freeing his people from slavery in Egypt to the Promised Land. Leviticus and Deuteronomy list the many laws God gave to his people through Moses.

According to tradition these books were written by Moses, but modern scholarship shows that they were written and compiled much later.
