Cleaning up the Chandler & Price jobbing press in our print shop exhibit after a press run

We often demonstrate a lot of letterpress printing in our print shop exhibit at the Sacramento History Museum, but not many people get to see the cleaning process. In this video, Jared shows the full cleaning process sped up a bit because the full video is almost 10 minutes long.

We use 1K kerosene as a solvent to clean the ink off of our 10x15 Chandler & Price Gordon-style jobbing press. This was after a press run where Howard printed 130 posters that are available in our museum store. Cleaning is always a long and laborious task but we hope you enjoy the video!

I ran one of these for many years. I used gloves and rags with cleaning solution. We had a rag cleaning company come by and exchange for clean rags.

There's a company in North Mankato, MN (Taylor Corp) that still has some of these kinds of presses. And they're still used for specialty jobs.

Of all the times to use the paper, why not put one between the clean flat part and the rollers while cleaning the rollers so you dont have to keep wiping the flat part?
