What's the difference between a Learning Experience Platform (LXP) and an Learning Management System (LMS)?

Learning Management Systems were primarily created in the nineteen-nineties to automate administration of training programs.

The original purpose of an LMS was to help academic and corporate training administrators to more easily assign and track highly structured, programmatic training content, delivered as e-learning or instructor-led training.

In contrast, Learning Experience Platforms were created to improve the learner experience.

LXPs are personalized, consumer-focused platforms that allow for more self-directed learning where learners themselves make choices about how and what they want to learn.

On an LXP, learners are in control of their own learning, where they can choose from pre-selected resources, or elect to develop new skills based upon what interests them the most at that moment.

In summary: LMS is "system of record" and LXP is "system of learning experiences."
