Radar is an object-detection system that uses radio waves to determine the range, angle, or velocity of objects. But how?

Watching this as a radar maintainer, in the Air Force, at work is the most meta thing I have experienced..

It seems to me that they are confusing phase shifting with frequency shifting. These are two different things.

I opened this video in a new tab and JESUS that beginning scared me.

0:26 an echo radar emits a **sound** wave?!?
no, it doesn't, that would be a sonar

also, a doppler radar measures the shift in frequency, not phase (phase measurement wouldn't make sense in this context)

"An echo RADAR emits a sound wave"

"Doppler RADARs emit a radio wave, too"

This seems to be implying that a sound wave (audio frequency, or AF) is the same thing as a radio wave (radio frequency, or RF). This is incorrect and if echo RADAR was using AF instead of RF, it wouldn't be RADAR at all, as RADAR stands for Radio Detection and Ranging, meaning it uses RF (Radio Frequency) exclusively. RF is electromagnetic waves, AF is sound waves/vibrations. Though these waves behave in a similar manner, they are most definitely not the same thing.

Source: I worked as a Radioman in the US Navy where we actually learned how our equipment worked, unlike the Air Force, apparently.

hi. I don't normally comment on videos, but I feel I need too as a physicist. Whilst this video is good, I feel as though in one very key area it is completely wrong. RADAR uses radio waves - most definitely not sound waves! I think you may have confused SONAR with RADAR, SONAR uses sound waves but is only underwater. RADAR works poorly underwater - SONAR works poorly in air. Normally you seem to be more accurate than this but this quite a key difference. However, both systems do use similar principles just different waves!

Radar uses *radio waves* to determine the range, angle, or velocity of objects.

How dose a hydraulic cilender work? And how dose a car or semi tuck engine work

At :25 she lost all credibility when she said RADAR emits sound waves.

I was asked what RADAR stood for in an interview once and I had NO IDEA

So the waves go in a straight line how would it go around the curvature of the earth?

wow, so many advertisements for the US air force...are they trying to recruit more people or something? I mean, why else would the US army be funding a you tube channel? weird
