HP Ipaq RZ1710 Review

A quick review of my new (basic and inexpensive but) sparkly and incredibly useful Ipaq.

I charge and sync the ipack with the dock, which supplies both the power and the data connection. I use the dock instead of the sync cable or the power cable.

The ipaq does play videos. The quality isn't amazing but it's not bad.

I bought the device two months ago, and didn't make a note of the URLs at the time, so I don't have a URL for you I'm afraid.
The UFO game is called "Pocket UFO" by SMK Software, and should be easy enough to find. As for GfDoom, there are half a dozen versions of it floating around the internet.

As for your second question, It's not very clear what you mean. You turn it on/off by selecting "Ipaq Entertainment" in the "Today" menu in Settings.

The format IS MP3, as far as I am aware.
The Ipaq plays mpeg and AVI files. This video was shot at 640x480. I believe the display resolution is 320x240, so there is some interpolation going on, .

Just go on ebay and search for RZ1710. You want to be looking at about £40 inc delivery.

Oh yes... I remember the iPaqs. Overpriced handheld 'PCs' that were clunky to use. Oh, and the stylus; they either break or go missing. Thank goodness for capacitive touchscreens.

To be honest, I haven't had cause to test the battery life.
In typical use, the ipaq is switched on for a short time, maybe to check notes or calendars or whatnot, and then turned off again (The Ipaq also turns itself off if left unused for a minute or so (you may need to set this up in control panel)).
The longest I've ever had it continuously on is about 30 minutes while playing Doom.
Mine is either in my pocket, in my hand being used, or on the charging cradle, so I can't conclusively say :)

It has internet if you buy a WiFi card, set it up properly, and have access to a WiFi signal area.

This was my first pocket pc and I still have it somewhere... and it sucks, I mean it was ok for games and music, but had such little ram that trying browse internet on it was, just not worth it or using any ram heavy application. Oh and lets not forget that it doesn't have bluetooth nor wifi, so the only way to get internet on this was plugging it to your pc, but if you cannot leave your house anyway, why not just use the computer?

You could get sd wifi card, but that would mean you have to decide whenever you will have extra space or internet and this device has only 10mb of storage space on top of 32mb of ram, which could be used as storage as well, but that's, if you want to have even less available ram.

I got hx4700 after that and it is so much better. For those who are asking, yes you can use GPS, if you get sd gps unit, but it must have a micro sd slot, because you need space to put maps on sd card, device memory is far too small. Cpu is slow so gps on this would be terrible, even if you manage to run it on only 17mb of free ram at best! I would recommend using a better pocket pc for that.

Technically the slot should support any normal non HC SD card, but this pocket pc can only use up to 1gb, I tried to use 2gb and it didn't work. Normal sd cards are up to 2gb, 4gb is SDHC anyway, so this wouldn't work, there are some regular 4gb sd cards available, but they are rare, you can only pick them from ebay, I bought few of these to use with my hx4700 and yes they work.

Ok, thanks! I'm considering buying this thing, so that's good to know it supports 2gb. I also have one more question. How is the battery life? HP says it gets 7 hours on average. Do you find that to be true with your experience?

I have no idea, I don't use my Ipaq on wifi.
I think if you already have a wireless network set up, you just need to buy the little interface card.

@asor001 I have absolutely no Idea I'm afraid. I've replaced the ipaq with an ipod touch. The only reason I still use the Ipaq is to play Pocket UFO.

Hey how do you upgrade it? I have the one that came out in 2003
