Artvin (TURKEY)

History
The area around Artvin was known variously as Çorok, Çoroksi and Livane. According to the ancient historian Xenophon, it was occupied by the Makron, Kolkh and Tao. The geographer Strabo states that in the 1st century BCE, there were many small kingdoms under Roman domination. The Bagratids established their rule here with the help of the Byzantines. In 1015, it passed to the Seljuk Turks. Except for a brief period during the Mongol invasion, it was ruled by a succession of Turkish dynasties such as the Ilkanids, Karakoyunlu, Akkoyunlu and finally the Ottoman Empire. Artvin was made part of the Eyalet of Çıldır. It was ceded to Russia as a result of the 1877-1878 war and regained in 1918 as part of the Brest Litovsk Treaty. In 7 June 1921, Artvin Sanjak was created, only to be reorganized into Artvin Province.
