The lack of courage of Italian soldiers during World War Two was legendary. Their officers were the worst and lived in luxury, while treating their men very poorly. I used to know many of the soldiers, who fought them. They all held this opinion. In southern Italy Commonwealth soldiers were starved to death, while Red Cross food parcels rotted outside the wire. The treatment was slightly better in Northern Italy. I know this from first hand conversations.
