How to Change Cursor Onhover and Add Clickable Links on the X Scales in Chart JS

In this video we will cover how to change cursor onhover and add clickable links on the x scales in chart js. This covers two advanced features in one but they are both closely related.

However, this is quite hard to do as Chart js removed the hover effect from everything outside the chartArea. The scales is considered outside of the chartArea. This means we need to build our own functionality in the Canvas API.

We will make the hover effect nicely based on the mousemove coordinates. Once we did that we need to get the scales coordinates which will confirm if we hover on top of a label. If it does it will show a pointer instead of default cursor.

Then we need to make sure that the clickable links are working and track which label we clicked on.

Afterward we need to make sure the resizing of the chart would not impact any of the adjustments of the chart coordinates. So we need to resize which triggers an indirect update of the coordinates of our function.

Let's explore this right now!

▬ About Us ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬

Why we created these #chartjs and #javascript video tutorials?

WHY
Creating charts in javascript is very rewarding but extremely challenging. The Chart JS library made it easier to render charts. However the chart js documentation is hard to understand for many. It requires a lot of different moving parts to work along. The canvas tag, javascript, arrays and Chart JS all need to be combined to draw an eye catching bar chart or line chart.

The videos explains the chart js documentation in a more visual and easy to understand way. You can follow along with the code and quickly grasp how it works. We cover the code in chart js but also what truly happens and why something happens when we write a line of code. This fundamental understanding gives clarity to you as a developer in chartjs. In short it is the Chart JS video documentation.

HOW
We answer questions from YOU (viewers) by creating an answer video that covers the questions YOU have posted in the comment section.

This was the most difficult chart js tutorial I've encountered and finished so far. It looks so simple at first, but it's quite a lot of work. You're definitely my "go-to guy" in this topic. Thanks again for taking the time to create these tutorials.

For anyone following this tutorial after me: Prepare yourself a warm cup of coffee. I bet you're going to spend so much time here that you might as well make yourself feel at home.
