How to Seed a Pasture - Planting a Pasture from Scratch with NO MACHINES

How do you plant a pasture from scratch with no planting machinery? In this video, we show you how we plant our pasture from scratch without the use of any machines.

The method we are using to plant our pastures requires seed that can be broadcast, walk behind spreaders or hand operated spreaders, lots of straw, and hopefully a little rain.

We planted lawns for years using this method and it worked great. Today we use this method to plant pasture for livestock, without the aid of any machinery.

You can broadcast seeds with saw dust, or fine soil, or sand, to help it germinate properly. Plant when you’re sure it’ll rain at least 2 to 3 times soon after planting. Rain is key.

This info is exactly what I was looking for! It's a shame more people haven't seen this. Too many think you need big equipment to get the job done.

We have horse pasture and they are quite fussy. We use a single grass + single legume per pasture otherwise horses will just eat the stuff they like and leave the rest. The main pasture is orchard grass and white clover, and another is bluegrass and red clover. Tip: make sure you over seed every year or your pasture will degrade quickly.

Hi, thanks for the video. Did you ever make a second part to follow up with the process and show how the land was looking a few months after? (Or whatever time it took for the grass to grow). I was checking your videos for the second part but I couldn't find any. Was it successful?

Heads up you cannot properly broadcast mixed seed. The settings for each seed size varies, so say 5 for 1 seed will let out all seed under 5 more rapidly causing and unbalanced seeding the small will always finish first.

you need a spinner type seeder/fertilizer spreader, I use a tow behind as well as a push style for all seeding

Thank you for the video. I am seeding two acres this fall. What is your plan/system for initial watering?

I wonder if soaking the seed would also help it root faster? Or if that'll clog up the machines?

But did it work?! was the pasture successful?? this is a cliff hanger!! :)

You could do that easier by rolling out round bales of hay....you get mulch and seed in one price and bundle with an easy spread out. Rain will do the rest.

Thanks for this video but I had expected to see the whole process from ploughing to seeding. I feel a bit blank on that one

Handsome boulder, adds to your place instead of subtracting.

You obviously left out a part. HOW DID YOU GET THE LAND BARE? That's where the machines come in isn't it?

Hi Aust, I know this video is older, is this still what you’d recommend? We’re about to plant a pasture this fall and trying to figure out the best approach. (Kill off existing grass under silage tarps or is that overdoing it?)

Do you have an after video with an update?

Could we use one shavings instead of straw? Or wood chips?

Good stuff! Do you mind sharing the material cost for that 2 acres? I have about 14 acres of native grass that I would like to seed for pasture but am not quite to that point yet. I think I'll probably put some cows on it for a while to knock some of the grass down. once I get to the seeding stage I'll have to split the pasture and seed each half at different times, while the cows stay on the other half.

Also, how did you go about clearing the land in preparation for seed? I used to do lawn and landscape and we just scalped the yards, then power raked or lightly rototilled to loosen up the soil. Once the seed was down we raked again to bury the seed, then we didn't need straw.
