At least 26 of the 87 killed in Europe's deadliest wildfire in decades died just yards from survivors who made it to the sea. Parents huddled with their children in an attempt to shield them from the flames in Mati, Greece, as they perished 30 steps from a gate that led others to safety. Christiana Fragou urged people into her garden through her compound gate after seeing they were trapped in the street. But while she and others ran down to the water, they heard the agonising screams of families perishing in the blaze as flames engulfed the four-acre plot.
