I want to say Thank you :) Your channel is really bringing back good memories from Era, when technology was not everywhere. When computers weren't that common, when configuration wasn't easy. and when games were amazing. Keep up great work! :)

I'm a DOS guy from way back but this is truly the best method for running those old DOS games. The big advantage is being able to boot into Windows to access network shares etc.. I mean that it's unnecessary to worry about any dual boot setup. And install DOS 6.22 etc.. Windows 9x does it all. Awesome job Phil in detailing plus the helpful starter packs. 👍

You have the best retro-PC videos. I used to be quite the MS-DOS wizard, but no longer. Now that I'm getting into casual retro-gaming (no time to do a whole lot of research or remembering), your videos are just what I required!

Just coming back to this video to say my thanks. Fantastic little starter pack, I would never have thought to look into DOS without it. I'm glad you delved into the explanation of how the PIF file works, helped me tie up those last few loose ends on getting my sound cards to automatically load in DOS.

I actually tried this a couple days ago. Went looking for your files from your previous video on this subject, found these instead and gave them a shot. Works very nicely, sir. Such a simple copy/paste solution! You have my thanks.

Thanks for your videos Phil!

Found a Slot 1 celeron 333mhz on the side of the road with a sound blaster in the ISA slot + geforce4 :)

This has been super helpful to get up and running!

I'll try to set this up as my main bootmenu or on a boot disc

It worked for mouse and CD drive, but I can't make my sound card work on MS DOS mode for the life of me. It's an AWE64. Would you have any guide to setup that? Maybe downgrading to a Soundblaster 16 would make life easier?

This is brilliant, i followed your easy2boot tutorial video too and after taking in all that you've explained, lots of searching and tracking down drivers from the internet archive from now defunct websites, plus hours and hours of cursing and headscratching I've managed to restore an old Panasonic CF-27 Toughbook (P2 @ 300Mhz) that i got for £20 on ebay.

Luckily it had a semi-working install of XP but I only have a floppy drive (which i needed to repair initially) but using a combination of PLOP and E2B I've now got a fully working install of Windows 98 SE (for which it has a licence on the underside) with working USB support, the correct video and audio drivers, further to that, after slightly modifying your pif command line file i've also got the Yamaha DS-XG sound working in DOS for some good old 90's DooM and Quake DOS-gaming action...

So, thank-you for your really instructive videos and the various files and drivers you host on your site! Cheers!

I cannot return to windows, it always reboots to the selection screen. What do I do?

Thanks for this one, Phil. You're a lifesaver. This is something that I probably COULD set up myself... but man, finding the patience & focus to get it set up is another story for me.

Nice guide! I have an old Win98-System on which most of my old games are running. I tried your MS-DOS mode configuration for some other old games. The mode starts well and I can select the settings in the menu. But when I enter my final command in DOS to start my game, there comes a black screen. What could be the reason for this?

This is excellent, thank you so much as always Phil! Just finished a Pentium II build to start exploring/revisiting the world of ISA sound cards. This was the perfect solution to allow me to partition my 45gb hard drive with a 20gb win98/dos partition to start. Thinking about putting xp on the remaining 25gb. I've got just the minimum requirements for CPU and RAM for xp...but that's for another thread. :D

This is absolutely fantastic, thank you very much. You saved me a long time, and did it better than i would've ended up doing it! You're really helpful... No doubt about it, the best computer help in the net!

Am gonna use this on two computers, P4 Celeron and also a P1!

Now i look forward to my SB Live! arriving and i'm good to go on DOS gaming :)

This looks really helpful!

I was trying to figure out how to set this stuff up automatically throughout the years, but this looks a lot more sophisticated than the hacky solutions and dead-ends I came up with over time.

I'm eager to try this out.

thanks for the tutorial, also the older dos video tutorials include the awe 64 gold that I would use. I build my thirst dos pc since the later 90s, so your tutorials are very welcome. :) Here are the components that I would use:

Celeron 266 without L2 Cache, more than enough for Dos and Dos Glide Games
FIC VL-601 mainboard with the 440LX chipset (the bios allows me to turn on the Write Combining und Write Posting to boost Dos Games in VGA or SVGA Mode)
192MB SD-RAM PC133
Diamond Stealth A200 8MB S3 Savage 4 (S3 Chips have a perfect Vesa Compatibility)
Orchid Righteous 3D Voodoo Graphics
Seagate 20 GB HD
Floppy Drive (I have all my disks from the 90s include MS-Dos 6.22 Installation disks)
LG DVD-ROM
Creative AWE 64 Gold
Windows 98 SE with Service Pack 2.1d and 3.0d
