Even though I live in Australia (dual British/Australian) I watch Monty avidly on youtube and have read his books. I immediately orderd 'Down to Earth' but was a little disappointed as I have many practical gardening books. I was hoping for more. Even though I was a little disappointed, it is a book I will pick up and read. Certainly an excellent gift for someone new to gardening or only a few years in. I like Monty's writing and as you say there are some lovely bits. Glad I bought it.
