Aside from folklore, eyewitnesses have claimed to see mermaids with their own two eyes. Were they manatees? The Jenny Hanivers? Or could mermaids be real?

I personally think Mermaids and Men did once exist, but were more fish than human. I like the myth because of the deep mysteries surrounding water. Anyways, if they did exist today, it's either down in the water or covered in trash cause of pollution.

Let's apply Occam's Razor to the question of what Columbus and possibly others saw. The three mermaids Columbus saw were in the water, as he said, "They rose well out of the sea...." This suggests that if they had tails, they were pointed downward to aid them in rising upward; thus, Columbus couldn't have seen mermaid tails. Manatees are unable to stand on their tails. What Columbus saw, then, were beings with upper bodies like women and lower bodies that were underwater and could not be seen. During the Age of Exploration, mermaid sightings were almost invariably made by explorers from cultures that didn't have a tradition of women working in the sea; and mermaid sightings were almost invariably in regions that did have a tradition of sea women. In some of these cultures, even today, sea women go topless and wear ankle-length skirts. In others, the sea women wore even less or nothing at all. (Not all mermaid sightings mention fishy tails.) Yes, Columbus quite frequently saw Taíno Indians on land, but the sight of naked women skillfully swimming in the sea was something new to him. His understanding of the sight may well have been influenced by tales of mermaids he had often heard.

I highly doubt people would confuse a manatees with a mermaid! A manatees looks absolutely nothing like a half human half fish creature. I find the whole "it's a manatees" story bullshit. I honestly dont know if mermaids exist or ever have existed, but I will say that our oceans are so large and deep and barely explored that we have no idea what's lurking in them! Maybe they exist, maybe they dont, but I don't rule their existence out, however, I do think it's the worst bs story ever when someone says "it was a manatees". 🙄 (rolling my eyes that people actually believe crap). On the other hand, even if these creatures were seen or even captured, our government would be quick to hide their existence from the public.
