The story shown in the film takes place both in Poland, and on Spitsbergen. Irek Sobota, its main protagonist, is a scientist at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun and head of the Polar Research Centre. His scientific activity is strictly related to managing the Polar Station on Spitsbergen. Within the span of the last 20 years, he participated in more than 30 research expeditions.
One could say that the Arctic is his second habitat, as he spends a couple of months there, every single year. This is a man torn between two homes and two totally different worlds.
When paying a visit to one of them, he usually misses the other. We are watching his life in Torun, his family, scientific work, and preparations for yet another expedition to the Hahut Nicolaus Copernicus University Polar Station on Spitsbergen. The film crew participates in this expedition, recording the everyday life of the polar explorers and their research work, especially when they work on glaciers. The film also offers an insight into the everyday life at the station, such as preparing meals, replenishing water supplies, and experiencing the breath-taking and awe-inspiring nature.
HAHUT will be a documentary dedicated to passion, which can also become one’s occupation. By telling a story about the connection between man and nature, we intend to raise awareness about the issue of climate change. By encouraging viewers to reflect on the problems discussed in it and adopting an objective, scientific approach, the film has the potential of shaping beliefs, attitudes, behaviours, and a lifestyle, which helps people stay healthy and minimise their impact on the surrounding environment.
If we look at our planet from the perspective of a system of interconnected vessels, it will be easier to realise that the shrinking of the ice sheet and the snow cap in the Arctic translates into an intensification of extreme weather phenomena occurring on the lower latitudes of the northern hemisphere, such as heat waves and droughts, violent hurricanes and storms, and also floods. Looking from that perspective, both places, i.e. Torun and Spitsbergen, no longer seem to be so distant to each other.
“Spitsbergen often teaches us about humbleness and respect for nature and its secrets, the limits of which we will probably never know. There is no denying that we can never be a match for this austere environment, despite all our efforts.” Ireneusz Sobota
