In 1913, Ireland’s independence was up for vote in the British Parliament…

…a bill was put before the British Parliament that would grant Ireland self-government. The bill was eventually passed in 1914, however, with World War I getting started, the bill did not take effect.

Then during the war, the British tried to draft Irishmen to fight for the British, but the Irish refused. This resulted in the Irish War of Independence immediately following World War I. When the fight was over, the Irish came into control of their government.

In December 1920, the Act of Ireland Government was passed and Ireland became the Irish Free State.
