Dog Befriends Disabled Kitten

Ralphee the kitten and Max the cattle dog are an odd couple who seem besotted with each other's company after they were introduced following Ralphee's rescue from a barn at a horse stable.

Ralphee's condition is a neurological disorder known as feline cerebellar hypoplasia. A kitten is born with "CH" when their cerebellum, the part of the brain that controls fine motor skills and coordination, is underdeveloped at birth.

These cats are known for their "drunken sailor" walk, which is why they're known endearingly as "wobbly cats."

Unless a CH cat has other health issues, their life expectancy is the same as a cat's without CH. Since the condition is non-progressive, it will never get worse — and in some cases, owners say that their cats become more capable over time.

Ever since Ralphee was brought home, Max is never far away. He appears to be forever curious and watches over Ralphee wherever she goes. Ralphee is growing more mischievous by the day and loves to see what Max is doing as well. She will often get excited when he is nearby and leap in the air before playfully charging in his direction.

Regarding the missing tail, this is how Ralphee was found. The father is a Manx.

Despite her condition, Ralphee is a happy cat who, like most kittens loves affection and causing all sorts of trouble wherever she goes.

Ralphee was a stray who was taken in from a horse stable. She has a neurological disorder, which makes head control and coordination a little difficult.  Ralphee isn’t in pain and is in fact very playful and active.  The tail is missing as Ralphee has Manx genes and this breed is known for their stub like tails. Ralphee has been to a vet to be checked out and is doing fine. The head wobbles seem to have improved somewhat since this video was filmed. It won’t ever disappear but cats with neurological disorders can adapt and live, long happy lives like other cats. Ralphee's outdoor play sessions are done under supervision from the owners. Max is an adopted cattle dog who use to be fearful of males but has since improved greatly.  These days he's an incredibly loyal and sweet dog. He takes a genuine interest in Ralphee during their time together outside.

I have a cat with a neurological disorder. When I saw her shaking at the shelter my heart went out to her and I knew I had to have her. I'm thankful every day for her. She brings so much joy to my life and I do my best to make her life as happy and trouble free as possible.

I cannot stop watching this video. I think this is the most adorable cat. She is happy, playful and enjoying life just the way she is. I love this cat!

At first, I felt real pity for Ralphee - his disorder looked terribly disorienting and perhaps painful. I was relieved and gladdened to learn that it's not painful, merely a difficulty with coordination. His "wobble" is downright endearing, and I would happily take on ownership of one, even if it meant extra care. Especially a tailless Manx like him.

God bless Ralphee and his wibbly-wobbly stuff, and his loyal canine caretaker.

Nothing can make a kitten uncute. It just makes him more adorable.

I would lose my shit seeing a kitten like this (or any kitten really). I think the disorder really makes her special.

We can learn a lot from watching animals with disabilities. They don't know how to feel sorry for themselves; they just do the best they can with what they have. And as long as they are cared for and loved, they are happy. When this cat gets older, I'm sure he'll be able adapt to his condition and be even more capable than he is now.

I see a pixar animated movie where the kitten is a genius and the head wobbling is just a physical manifestation of his eccentric nature. The dog is of course the "normal" sidekick that watches out for the kitten as he encounters various obstacles that comes with interacting with the ordinary world.

When people told me I dance like a disabled kitten I had no idea what they meant up until right now.

At first blush, I was worried, but after your kind explanation, I applaud your efforts and your humanity.

I am immensely charmed by these two friends. I have watched the short and extended versions both and sometimes come back for a smile. Strangely, due to a recent severe concussion I suffered, and my own brain injury, Ralphee cheers me up. Both friends are making the best of things!
