Since 1962, The Dubliners have been enthralling audiences worldwide with their music and song. The strength and attractiveness of The Dubliners has always been in the personalities of the musicians who have made up this boisterous band of balladeers, from original members, Ronnie Drew, Barney McKenna, Luke Kelly, Ciarán Bourke, John Sheahan and Bob Lynch to the arrival at different stages of Jim McCann, Seán Cannon, Eamonn Campbell and finally the peerless Paddy Reilly.

I was on a tour bus leaving Kilmainham Gaol when the tour guide sang this. I don’t think there was a dry eye in the house afterwards.

The inhumanity of his death is a slant on those who ordered his execution. It's difficult not to be an emotionally moved after singing along with the heartening lyrics of this tragic love story. May they live together for all eternity. 🙏

It’s such a shame that people don’t know about or have forgotten the tragic story of Grace’s sister Muriel, which in some ways is as sad if not more so than Graces story and of course are events that increased the devastation and sense of loss for Grace herself and the children. Sad times indeed but a period of history the Irish people can be so proud of, times and events that still stand as a beacon of light for Irish freedom. It is their memory and deeds that keep the flame of liberty alive.

As we gather in the chapel here in old Kilmainham Gaol
I think about these past few weeks, oh will they say we've failed?
From our school days, they have told us we must yearn for liberty
Yet, all I want in this dark place is to have you here with me

Chorus:
Oh Grace, just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love, I place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye

Now, I know it's hard for you, my love, to ever understand,
The love I bear for these brave men, my love for this Dear land
But when Pádhraic called me to his side down in the G.P.O.
I had to leave my own sick bed, to him I had to go

Chorus:
Oh Grace, just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love, I place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye

Now as the dawn is breaking, my heart is breaking too
On this May morn, as I walk out, my thoughts will be of you
And I'll write some words upon the wall so everyone will know
I love so much that all I could see his blood upon the Rose.

Chorus:
Oh Grace, just hold me in your arms and let this moment linger
They'll take me out at dawn and I will die
With all my love, I place this wedding ring upon your finger
There won't be time to share our love for we must say goodbye

Has there ever been such an evocative account of someone knowing they are facing their last hours on this earth?

Monumental. Magnificent and everything an Irishman could ever ask for. The true love of his woman and his dedication to his beliefs. You can't import that from any of those false flag nations. Our heroes were Irishmen. No nation on this earth have the hearts of Irishmen.

Saw an old lady silence a Temple Bar pub singing this a few weeks ago and became obsessed with it. What an incredible, moving song

"Will they say we failed?"

None of the men of 1916 failed. On the contrary, given the state of Ireland in 2022, it is WE who have failed them.
