WEST LINDSEY PARISH #75: WILLOUGHTON

Welcome to Willoughton which is situated 2 miles away from the A15 about 3 miles South of Kirton in Lindsey. This one was brand new to me despite it being in West Lindsey!

For that reason, upon coming here I had absolutely no idea that Willoughton once had a preceptory - a holding of the Knights Templar which stood at a farm called Temple Garth

The preceptory was founded during the reign of King Stephen. It was the richest of the English houses of the Templars. It was dissolved in 1540 and its lands passed to King's College, Cambridge

You can see the preceptory’s very well preserved earthworks if you know where to go. Of course I didn’t but I have found a very good picture of them which I’ll show you in this video

It’s another very rural settlement, and a very quiet one too. Industry wise it’s dominated by farming, and dotted around the village are all sorts of old farm buildings

The name Willoughton derives from the Old English words “wilig”and “tun”, and it means “willow tree farm or settlement”. Famous historian Ethel Rudkin lived in the village for much of her life

Willoughton has a church, primary school, a village hall, a playing field and a pub. It used to have a post office and village shop too but these have both closed down now

Come with me once again, and lets see what else we can find!

Enjoyed the look at the area where some of my ancestors began their lives before emigrating to America in the mid 1800s. Surnames were Toyne (sometimes Toyn) and Gleadell. Toynes are buried at the old St. Andrew. They were all farm laborers. I hope to get over there for a visit in the next year or so.

I can read Latin so I might have been able to translate, if the writing on that house you pointed out had been legible. If you come across any other Latin inscriptions anywhere else, I can try and translate. I can also understand Russian and Italian, but these will be less relevant, although you never know I suppose.
