I am a River fan. Relegation hurt at the time, but before then the club won like one national thropy in 10 years, was always out early in international competition and was loosing against Boca all the time. After relegation we won three international thropys (One sudsmericana, two Libertadores) started beating Boca all the time and have won three leagues and a Copa Argentina. The bosteros haven't been relegated (Yet) but they have been stagnant since the same period and now Riquelme is running the club to the ground according to their own fans.

Came back and beat Boca in the Copa Libertadores final that was potentially the most followed Copa final since it was played at the Bernabéu

Another thing from Argentinian football: when Independiente (another big club) was relegated in 2013, Racing (their biggest rival) celebrated as if they won a title

This is why I hope relegation/promotion are someday implemented into American soccer. The emotions are unmatched.

You have to look here in Brazil, I'm a Santos fan, we were relegated for the first time last year in 111 years, our dear stardium Vila Belmiro looked like an war scenario.

Also, back in 2011 Boca and River weren't the only big team to never get relegated, Independiente also boasted that title before their relegation in 2014 after losing 1-0 at home to San Lorenzo (fun fact: Angel Correa, Atletico Madrid's current number 10, scored the winning goal of the match)

The problem is that, in Argentina, que changes the rules ALL the time to help the big teams. In 2011, they let the league take its course alone

My introduction to River Plate was a news article of Arsenal being linked to Falcao in 2007 for £7mil.

That first statement is wrong. At the time Independiente River Plate and Boca Juniors were never relegated.

Same here in Brazil, only 3 big clubes used to be always in 1st division, Santos(myself a lover), São Paulo and Flamengo. Last year Santos got relegated in the last round by a goal that Péle, Santos biggest idol, never did. Also, Pelé died before it happened and Cosmo, the founder of santos ultras(torcida jovem) also died. They couldnt see that in life i guess... The city of Santos went in war mode, everything being burned and destroyed, people were mad and sad.

2014 I got a chance to go to Argentina and tour Boca’s Stadium…was an unreal experience and would do it again if I could.

Relegation is serious business in South American football. And I speak as a Brazilian. Argentina take it much more seriously btw.

Argentinian league relegation also works quite funny, even to this day. River didnt get relegated due to a one-season bad campaign, but because of the "Promedios", or Average Points System. It, basically divided the amount of points a team got throughout 3 seasons (in this case 08/09, 09/10 and 10/11) by the amount of games played. In a 20-team league, that made n°20 and 19 get automatically relegated, while 18 and 17 (River) played a two-legged promotion against n°3 and 4 from the second division respectively.

That happened in Peru, Alianza lima got relegated twice in their history. In Peru though Alianza managed to argue that a team they were fight relegation with didn’t pay their team on time or it was something around those lines that they managed to get that to lose points so that they stayed in the first division. They follow year though they were back to back champs. Even with that we (Universitario) will never let them forget it. Especially that right after alianza became back to back champions, La U also became back to back champs, and we are going for the third this year

Not only in Argentina, being relegated is the worst thing that can happen to a club. That's why Inter is the best club in Italy.
