Founded in 2000, the goal of Universal Metro Asian Services (UMAS) was originally to serve the immigrant populations of South Asia. Providing services to help the elderly remain in their home rather than be institutionalized in nursing homes. To that end, UMAS provides Home Care and Adult Day Care services; paying particular attention to the participant’s cultural and social preferences.

As seniors get older maintaining their independence and living in their own home can become near impossible as everyday chores become more and more difficult. UMAS provides home care tailored to each senior’s particular needs that helps them keep their independence from the privacy of their own home.

For those seniors who want the opportunity to get out of their home on a daily basis, the adult day care centers provide a venue for the elderly to get involved in structured and fun-filled activities alongside their peers. As both Santosh and Triguna explain, having this opportunity to socialize with their peers alleviates the feelings of loneliness and isolation that can come when a senior is left at home without a caregiver or companion. UMAS services also allow the sons and daughters of these seniors to focus on their work without fear that their parents are being well cared for.

The organization will be opening a new adult day care facility in Naperville in 2018.

Over the years, the organization has evolved from serving primarily the needs of immigrants from Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan to serving all immigrant communities. In addition to Home Care and Adult Day Services, UMAS also provides a variety of other services to support all families who are finding their way in America and learning how to navigate the various social service, government, and legal systems.
