My Deliverer by Rich Mullins (Cover by Melody Hwang)

[Day 25 of my 40-day creative challenge]
Rich Mullins has always been one of my favorite worship leader songwriters. His music has deeply impacted the church and my own personal life, with songs like "Awesome God," "Sometimes by Step," and "If I Stand." An incredible lyricist, he also actively lived out his lyrics by embracing the simple, stripped-down, Gospel-centered life; he rejected wealth and fortune for a simple dwelling among the Navajo indians and dedicated himself to compassion and serving. His songs are full of depth and creativity. He tragically died in a car accident in 1997, when I was six years old, but his music lives on.
This song was actually one of the last songs he ever wrote--they found the scratch tape among his possessions and then produced it with a full-on orchestra and band after his death. The words in the song "I will never doubt His promise though I doubt my heart, I doubt my eyes" really speak of Mullin's deep trust in the Lord, even though his life ended so suddenly. I will always be inspired by this man.
Lyrics:
Joseph took his wife and her child and they went to Africa
To escape the rage of a deadly king
There along the banks of the Nile, Jesus listened to the song
That the captive children used to sing
They were singin'
My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by
My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by
Through a dry and thirsty land, water from the Kenyon heights
Pours itself out of Lake Sangra's broken heart
There in the Sahara winds Jesus heard the whole world cry
For the healing that would flow from His own scars
The world was singing
My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by
My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by
He will never break His promise, He has written it upon the sky
My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by
My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by
My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by
I will never doubt His promise though I doubt my heart, I doubt my eyes
My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by
My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by
My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by
He will never break His promise though the stars should break faith with the sky
My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by
