They’re safe, living a luxurious life, that’s what they care about. Politicians.

As an American, I can't even begin to describe how ashamed and disgusted I was by my nation's response to the pandemic, or lack thereof, to be precise.

"Famine or no famine, they'll breed like rabbits." Boris somehow reminds me of Winston Churchill.

The life vs livelihood equation is indeed complicated. I don't know the full answer as to what we should do, but it irritates me how one-sided much of the thinking is. I shall present the other side of the argument.

Fighting Covid-19 is important, but let's not obsess over one single threat. Other dangers are important too.

Last year, there were supposedly 1-2 million deaths with Covid-19 complications. (Now it's about 3 million total.) It's a success that there were not more deaths with Covid-19 complications, but the 2018 flu which killed 3 million in one single year was not even labelled a pandemic. There were no lockdowns. Last year, 7 million people died from hunger - the most in recent history. One reason for the rise in starvation is the huge cuts in foreign aid due to economies being damaged by lockdowns. We may even see starvation in the wealthier countries, and there are already many extra deaths in these countries from late or undiagnosed illnesses and from suicide.

Meanwhile, many elderly and otherwise vulnerable people (no longer with us) have lived their final year in this world in loneliness and misery due to lockdowns.

How many good years can we hope to have in our lives? Between 20 and 60 depending on what you call a good year. Seems we are losing at least 2 of them to protect us against a low average risk of dying of Covid-19. Maybe the pandemic would be much, much worse without our extreme sacrifices. I guess we'll never know.

I'm one of the many millions of workers whose job disappeared overnight, just over a year ago. I am living under curfew and other restrictions, with no permission to travel beyond the region I live in. Is this living?
