Nizhny Novgorod // The city on the Volga River // Sights and history

Nizhny Novgorod is a city in the European part of Russia, located at the confluence of two great rivers, the Volga and the Oka. Nizhny Novgorod has long been a trade center connecting the north and south of Russia, and to some extent it is a birthplace of the Russian capitalism. This city has its own Kremlin, metro system and even a rope way above the Volga River! This year Nizhny Novgorod celebrates tis 800 anniversary, and I visited it just after the celebration. It was interesting to learn about the city sights and how they are connected with Russia's history.

Im from the Philippines and my wife is from Nizhny Novgorod. I was there during the 800th anniversary of the city. It's beautiful. I've been to Europe and i lived in California for 20 years and i have to say Nizhny Novgorod is one of the most beautiful, clean, and fascinating cities I have ever been. The Russian people are very welcoming and kind. My wife's family welcomed me with open arms and I feel so at home in Russia than anywhere else I've been. As an anglichanin tourist with only some small experience of Russian cities outside of Moscow and Peter I would say that this was my favourite city that I visited. Again, I have only visited Western Russia, Europe side of the Urals, but Nizhny Novgorod was a beautiful gem of a city that I was not aware of until I went for the Football World Cup in 2018. With such historic streets, the amazing Kremlin, and beautiful sunset at the junction of the two rivers - it sort of reminded me of Kalamagden Fortress in Belgrade Serbia but not quite as old - as the sun was going down there were some spectacular views. Easy to get around with the metro, lots to see and do, eat and drink and party for young people. Excellent video about an excellent city. I hope more simple tourists such as me get to visit.

Loving these awkward situations, like dealing with the broken ‘VIP’ ticket. And you point out things: “I want to roll down that hill” - which clearly looked like falling off an edge of a grassy cliff!
I especially love the really meaningless details that you share because they are more interesting to everyone, as well. You are way more entertaining than any boring professional tour guide’s video. I lived there for 1 year. It's one of my favorite cities in Russia. Many places to visit here and a few days are not enough. I also took the cable car to Bore city (It's not boring like its name) It's nice that any city I lived in always has a beautiful view of the Volga and nice embankment and parks. I love that they still preserve the old city and buildings.
