Māori and Dairy Farms

People often say "There are lots of Māori dairy farmers, how do we stop them from harming the land when its given back to them?"

Well... First off, honouring Te Tiriti is a justice issue. What Māori choose to do with their returned whenua is up to them.

The reason we believe decolonial justice will also be a pathway to environmental justice, is because people are judging Māori dairy farmers and Māori generally off of their modern actions within the colonial system that constrains all of us. Decolonial justice means Mana Motuhake and Tinorangatiratanga, which would mean Māori having a say in the decisions that shape our society and the economic pathways available to our people. Putting Māori values at the heart of our communities is precisely the foundation we need to imagine a world without this harmful industry.

Raising cattle for food and dairy doesn’t automatically mean it’s environmentally harmful. Regenerative cattle farming is a net negative carbon footprint and the food /dairy tastes better.
