Third World Newsreel (TWN) promotes films about social issues made by people of color, underrepresented communities, and their allies.
TWN Training
TWN has trained hundreds of film and video artists through its annual Production Workshop; spring and fall Evening Seminars; and Senior, Youth and Community Media workshops.
TWN Educational Streaming
TWN's streaming channel offers educational institutions social issue media made by or about people of color.
TWN Distribution
TWN provides distribution to media arts creators from historically marginalized communities with an emphasis on filmmakers of color, who otherwise have limited access to media distribution outlets.
TWN Screenings and Exhibitions
TWN serves diverse audiences nationwide by facilitating the exhibition of our unique film catalog in public and educational screenings.
TWN Fiscal Sponsorship
TWN serves as a fiscal sponsor of independent film and electronic media productions, as well as artistic, educational and cultural projects emphasizing social justice issues and the concerns and interests of people, groups, and nations often marginalized in mainstream media.
TWN Stock Footage
Third World Newsreel (TWN) provides archival footage to producers, broadcasters and news services, including footage of the leadership of the Black Panther Party, the Young Lords Party, the Anti Vietnam War Movement, the Student Movement, the Housing Movement, and Women's Liberation Movement, among others.
TWN Funders
In 2018 TWN was supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature, public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the New York City Council, the National Film Preservation Foundation, Humanities New York, and the Peace Development Fund, as well as individual donors.

Since 1968, Third World Newsreel (TWN) has advanced movement storytelling and media arts for cultural and social justice. We champion the self-representation of historically marginalized communities—including Black, Latine, Indigenous, Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander, Middle Eastern, North African, Mixed/Multiracial, People with Disabilities, and LGBTQIA+ individuals—through diverse genres and forms of media, such as documentary, experimental, and fiction. Our comprehensive support includes hands-on training, fiscal sponsorship, educational distribution, and preservation, all designed to advance cultural justice and societal change. Our aim is to facilitate their efforts to create, engage, and amplify their stories, propelling audiences to action.
