Stages of Production (Frisk vs Mettaton)

Some of my followers tend to think this took 3 years to make. It didn't. I made the animatic then 2 years later decided to animate it cause I just wanted a project to work on. It took a year for the animation itself, then I went back in and added shading (frame by frame) and lighting and animated several backgrounds (including the rotating stage scene).

People usually don't think about compositing as a part of animation, but I also had to take all 80+ scenes and put them into one file and make sure the music was synced. Which was difficult because after effects isn't a video editing program and the audio scrubbing sucks.

Because Frisk and MTT are such simple designs, my roughs ended up being very close to my finished animation without much fixing. If the character designs were more advanced or sophisticated I can't imagine how much longer this would've taken. (Plus, I had been drawing MTT for years at that point, so I was very familiar with his design in 3d space.) I noticed a big difference in the character drawings between the animatic and rough animation and I feel like I improved a lot, which makes me happy c:

Budget breakdown:
$1,000 for permanent ToonBoom Harmony Advanced license
$500 for my backgrounds artist (+ some gift art I made her)
$21 for one month of AfterEffects
$2 for a chromatic abberation effect I bought to use when Frisk got zapped

I didn't get paid to do this, it was a labor of love

The fact that this only took a year and a half is what surprises me. When you’re an independent animator, two minutes of pure animation in only a year 1/2 is S P E E D.

Absolutely spectacular!! I always find seeing the process of sketches to smooth animation fascinating (your old style of Mettaton is really cute too) and reading the description was also very interesting as well. I really like getting to hear more about anything behind the scenes.
And I have to say, your hard work definitely was worth it!

Honestly if i tried to do this and go through the countless hours of trying to animate something amazing as this.... Id give up in the first 2 seconds of me tryinf because im an idiot who will never be good at anything and i try and i keep trying and i have improved but ill never get any better so.... Ok no ive gone off track but like holy frisk! This is amazing! I love everything from the art style to the way the fight plays out and seeing how youve created it is amazing like... How are you so damn patient and motivated?!?!? Like.... Oh my asgore you're such an inspiration! I wish i could be like you but ill never be able to but i swear you're the only reason i keep trying!!! I found to be interesting how like the first stage of this animation was just like a normal animation or comic dub or even an animatic you would find for undertale and do see the difference between just an everyday average like an Ematic or even just to, stop that's to this thing it's just shows how great it is
